page 518 note 1 Brooke was born about 1752, and died at Benares in 1833. He landed in India in 1769.
page 518 note 2 Handwriting is mentioned first as of most importance. To a Musalmān, bad handwriting is looked upon as an actual sin. It is a curious trait that Orientals seem to look upon writing and reading as two totally different accomplishments. I remember once, when we were getting up a girls' school in Patna, some old-fashioned Musalmāns telling me that they did not mind their daughters being taught reading, but it must stop at that. They would not consent to their learning to write, although, of course, reading necessarily included the reading of the written hand.
