Elections 2011
IPA Council
In November 2010, elections were held to choose twenty members of the Association's Council who will serve from 2011 to 2015. The following twenty-one nominees were elected as the last three candidates received an equal number of votes:

PCICPhS representatives
A separate election was also held in November 2010 of five IPA-elected representatives to the Permanent Council for the Organisation of the International Congresses of Phonetic Sciences. The following nominees were elected to serve from 2011 to 2019:

Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund
The Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund was established after Gösta Bruce, President of the IPA, passed away in June 2010 (http://www.langsci.ucl.ac.uk/ipa/gb_memorialfund.html). In December 2010, the IPA Council approved the following in relation to the use of the fund:
(a) the IPA will support travel scholarships for student members to present their research at ICPhS;
(b) awards will be called the ‘Gösta Bruce Scholarship’;
(c) 50% of the scholarships will be given to students carrying out research on prosody and 50% for research on other areas of phonetics;
(d) in principle, relatively small amounts of money will be distributed to many people;
(e) a distribution of scholarships to students from a variety of countries will be ensured, paying particular attention to applications from students working in countries where funding opportunities are limited.
The selection criteria will include:
1. notification of acceptance of a paper by the ICPhS organisers;
2. letter from student discussing originality and contribution of research;
3. supporting letter from the supervisor of the research or other research mentor.
For ICPhS 2011, ten scholarships for the amount of 300 Euros each will be awarded. The deadline for applications is 20 May 2011. Students should send their applications to the Secretary, Katerina Nicolaidis, [email protected].
The IPA would like to thank Gösta Bruce's family for the initiative to establish the fund and their donation. Thanks are also extended to all the contributors to the fund. Among these are the editor of and the contributors to the book Prosody: Theory and Experiment. Studies Presented to Gösta Bruce (Kluwer, 2000), which was published as a tribute to Gösta on the occasion of his 50th birthday, for donating the royalties from the book to the memorial fund. In December 2010, the IPA Council approved the proposal made by the editor of the book, Merle Horne, for maintaining a permanent webpage for the Gösta Bruce memorial fund that will include information about Gösta Bruce and his contributions to the field, the existence and purpose of the memorial fund, and the Festschrift.
