Footnotes
I should like to record my very grateful thanks to Mr. John MacInnes for help, information and advice on the background and textual material, and to Mr. Nicolson himself for his enthusiastic co-operation. In my talk I traced in detail the development of Calum Ruadh's standardization of his melodic models and his “creative” adaptations of the standardized model. As I have had to economize on musical transcriptions here, it has been impossible to reproduce the eight illustrations of the talk, and I have recast the final section.
