We give a simple set of geometric conditions on curves $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$, $\widetilde{\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}}$ in $\mathbf{H}$ from $0$ to $\infty$ so that if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}:\mathbf{H}\rightarrow \mathbf{H}$ is a homeomorphism which is conformal off $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D702})=\widetilde{\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}}$ then $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ is a conformal automorphism of $\mathbf{H}$. Our motivation comes from the fact that it is possible to apply our result to random conformal welding problems related to the Schramm–Loewner evolution (SLE) and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). In particular, we show that if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ is a non-space-filling $\text{SLE}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}}$ curve in $\mathbf{H}$ from $0$ to $\infty$, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ is a homeomorphism which is conformal on $\mathbf{H}\setminus \unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D702})$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ are equal in distribution, then $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ is a conformal automorphism of $\mathbf{H}$. Applying this result for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}=4$ establishes that the welding operation for critical ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}=2$) LQG is well defined. Applying it for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\in (4,8)$ gives a new proof that the welding of two independent $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}/4$-stable looptrees of quantum disks to produce an $\text{SLE}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}}$ on top of an independent $4/\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}}$-LQG surface is well defined.

We consider a new subgroup In(G) in any group G of finite Morley rank. This definably characteristic subgroup is the smallest normal subgroup of G from which we can hope to build a geometry over the quotient group G/ In(G). We say that G is a geometric group if In(G) is trivial.

This paper is a discussion of a conjecture which states that every geometric group G of finite Morley rank is definably linear over a ring K1 ⊕…⊕ Kn where K1,…,Kn are some interpretable fields. This linearity conjecture seems to generalize the Cherlin–Zil'ber conjecture in a very large class of groups of finite Morley rank.

We show that, if this linearity conjecture is true, then there is a Rosenlicht theorem for groups of finite Morley rank, in the sense that the quotient group of any connected group of finite Morley rank by its hypercentre is definably linear.

It is proved that if $\varphi \colon A\to B$ is a local homomorphism of commutative noetherian local rings, a nonzero finitely generated B-module N whose flat dimension over A is at most $\operatorname {edim} A - \operatorname {edim} B$ is free over B and $\varphi $ is a special type of complete intersection. This result is motivated by a ‘patching method’ developed by Taylor and Wiles and a conjecture of de Smit, proved by the first author, dealing with the special case when N is flat over A.

We provide evidence for this conclusion: given a finite Galois cover $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$ of group $G$, almost all (in a density sense) realizations of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ do not occur as specializations of $f$. We show that this holds if the number of branch points of $f$ is sufficiently large, under the abc-conjecture and, possibly, the lower bound predicted by the Malle conjecture for the number of Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of given group and bounded discriminant. This widely extends a result of Granville on the lack of $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on quadratic twists of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with large genus, under the abc-conjecture (a diophantine reformulation of the case $G=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ of our result). As a further evidence, we exhibit a few finite groups $G$ for which the above conclusion holds unconditionally for almost all covers of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$ of group $G$. We also introduce a local–global principle for specializations of Galois covers $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$ and show that it often fails if $f$ has abelian Galois group and sufficiently many branch points, under the abc-conjecture. On the one hand, such a local–global conclusion underscores the ‘smallness’ of the specialization set of a Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$. On the other hand, it allows to generate conditionally ‘many’ curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ failing the Hasse principle, thus generalizing a recent result of Clark and Watson devoted to the hyperelliptic case.

We give an algebraic description of the structure of the analytic universal cover of a complex abelian variety which suffices to determine the structure up to isomorphism. More generally, we classify the models of theories of ‘universal covers’ of rigid divisible commutative finite Morley rank groups.

We show that the image of the Abel–Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel–Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also recover a result of Deligne on complete intersections of Hodge level 1.

For an infinite cardinal ${\it\kappa}$, let $\text{ded}\,{\it\kappa}$ denote the supremum of the number of Dedekind cuts in linear orders of size ${\it\kappa}$. It is known that ${\it\kappa}<\text{ded}\,{\it\kappa}\leqslant 2^{{\it\kappa}}$ for all ${\it\kappa}$ and that $\text{ded}\,{\it\kappa}<2^{{\it\kappa}}$ is consistent for any ${\it\kappa}$ of uncountable cofinality. We prove however that $2^{{\it\kappa}}\leqslant \text{ded}(\text{ded}(\text{ded}(\text{ded}\,{\it\kappa})))$ always holds. Using this result we calculate the Hanf numbers for the existence of two-cardinal models with arbitrarily large gaps and for the existence of arbitrarily large models omitting a type in the class of countable dependent first-order theories. Specifically, we show that these bounds are as large as in the class of all countable theories.

We use the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of even-dimensional unitary groups to construct level-raising congruences.

Let $\widetilde{\text{Sp}}(2n)$ be the metaplectic covering of $\text{Sp}(2n)$ over a local field of characteristic zero. The core of the theory of endoscopy for $\widetilde{\text{Sp}}(2n)$ is the geometric transfer of orbital integrals to its elliptic endoscopic groups. The dual of this map, called the spectral transfer, is expected to yield endoscopic character relations which should reveal the internal structure of $L$-packets. As a first step, we characterize the image of the collective geometric transfer in the non-archimedean case, then reduce the spectral transfer to the case of cuspidal test functions by using a simple stable trace formula. In the archimedean case, we establish the character relations and determine the spectral transfer factors by rephrasing the works by Adams and Renard.

Vincent Lafforgue's bivariant K-theory for Banach algebras is invariant in the second variable under a rather general notion of Morita equivalence. In particular, the ordinary topological K-theory for Banach algebras is invariant under Morita equivalences.

In this article, we study some Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators with a polynomial potential $V(q)$ of degree greater than two having quadratic limiting behaviour. This work provides an accurate global subelliptic estimate for Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators under some conditions imposed on the potential.

Let $\mu $ be a probability measure on $\mathrm {GL}_d(\mathbb {R})$, and denote by $S_n:= g_n \cdots g_1$ the associated random matrix product, where $g_j$ are i.i.d. with law $\mu $. Under the assumptions that $\mu $ has a finite exponential moment and generates a proximal and strongly irreducible semigroup, we prove a Berry–Esseen bound with the optimal rate $O(1/\sqrt n)$ for the coefficients of $S_n$, settling a long-standing question considered since the fundamental work of Guivarc’h and Raugi. The local limit theorem for the coefficients is also obtained, complementing a recent partial result of Grama, Quint and Xiao.

Let $G$ be a group hyperbolic relative to a finite collection of subgroups ${\mathcal{P}}$. Let ${\mathcal{F}}$ be the family of subgroups consisting of all the conjugates of subgroups in ${\mathcal{P}}$, all their subgroups, and all finite subgroups. Then there is a cocompact model for $E_{{\mathcal{F}}}G$. This result was known in the torsion-free case. In the presence of torsion, a new approach was necessary. Our method is to exploit the notion of dismantlability. A number of sample applications are discussed.

Let $L/F$ be a quadratic extension of totally real number fields. For any prime $p$ unramified in $L$, we construct a $p$-adic $L$-function interpolating the central values of the twisted triple product $L$-functions attached to a $p$-nearly ordinary family of unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\text{Res}_{L\times F/F}(\text{GL}_{2})$. Furthermore, when $L/\mathbb{Q}$ is a real quadratic number field and $p$ is a split prime, we prove a $p$-adic Gross–Zagier formula relating the values of the $p$-adic $L$-function outside the range of interpolation to the syntomic Abel–Jacobi image of generalized Hirzebruch–Zagier cycles.

We prove that either the images of the mapping class groups by quantum representations are not isomorphic to higher rank lattices or else the kernels have a large number of normal generators. Further, we show that the images of the mapping class groups have non-trivial 2-cohomology, at least for small levels. For this purpose, we considered a series of quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups extending the previous work of Barge and Ghys (Math. Ann. 294 (1992), 235–265) and of Gambaudo and Ghys (Bull. Soc. Math. France 133(4) (2005), 541–579). These quasi-homomorphisms are pull-backs of the Dupont–Guichardet–Wigner quasi-homomorphisms on pseudo-unitary groups along quantum representations.

In order to construct a counterexample to Zilber's conjecture—that a strongly minimal set has a degenerate, affine or field-like geometry—Ehud Hrushovski invented an amalgamation technique which has yielded all the exotic geometries so far. We shall present a framework for this construction in the language of standard geometric stability and show how some of the recent constructions fit into this setting. We also ask some fundamental questions concerning this method.

Viro method plays an important role in the study of topology of real algebraic hypersurfaces. The T-primitive hypersurfaces we study here appear as the result of Viro's combinatorial patchworking when one starts with a primitive triangulation. We show that the Euler characteristic of the real part of such a hypersurface of even dimension is equal to the signature of its complex part. We explain how this can be understood in tropical geometry. We use this result to prove the existence of maximal surfaces in some three-dimensional toric varieties, namely those corresponding to Nakajima polytopes.

Si la dérivée $\partial f/\partial Y$ rendue unitaire est encore quasi-ordinaire de Laurent—ce qui peut être toujours obtenu par changement de base—nous montrons que l’on peut mesurer le contact de ses facteurs avec ceux de $f$ en fonction d’invariants discrets de $f$ qui mesurent le contact entre ses racines, codés sous la forme de l’arbre d’Eggers–Wall. Tous les calculs sont faits en termes de chaînes et de cochaînes supportées par cet arbre. Ce travail constitue une généralisation de résultats connus pour les germes de courbes planes.

Let G be a reductive p-adic group which splits over an unramified extension of the ground field. Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda [24] conjectured that the formal degree of a square-integrable G-representation $\pi $ can be expressed in terms of the adjoint $\gamma $ -factor of the enhanced L-parameter of $\pi $ . A similar conjecture was posed for the Plancherel densities of tempered irreducible G-representations.

We prove these conjectures for unipotent G-representations. We also derive explicit formulas for the involved adjoint $\gamma $ -factors.

The $p$-cohomology of an algebraic variety in characteristic $p$ lies naturally in the category $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ of coherent complexes of graded modules over the Raynaud ring (Ekedahl, Illusie, Raynaud). We study homological algebra in this category. When the base field is finite, our results provide relations between the absolute cohomology groups of algebraic varieties, log varieties, algebraic stacks, etc., and the special values of their zeta functions. These results provide compelling evidence that $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ is the correct target for $p$-cohomology in characteristic $p$.
