A sufficient condition, for a complete submanifold of a Riemannian manifold of positive constant curvature to be umbilical, is given. The condition will be given by an inequality which is established between the length of the second fundamental tensor and the mean curvature.

The paper is concerned with the determination of the degree of convergence of a sequence of linear operators connected with the Fourier series of a function of class Lp (p > 1) to that function and some inverse results in relating the convergence to the classes of functions. In certain cases one can obtain the saturation results too. In all cases Lp norm is used.

Some characterizations of nil radical and nil semisimple power series rings are given. The upper nil radical of a power series ring in an uncountable set of non-commutative indeterminates is completely described.

Let G be a primitive permutation group of finite degree n containing a subgroup H which fixes k points and has r orbits on Δ, the set of points it moves. An old and important theorem of Jordan says that if r = 1 and k ≥ 1 then G is 2-transitive; moreover if H acts primitively on Δ then G is (k + 1)-transitive. Three extensions of this result are proved here: (i) if r = 2 and k ≥ 2 then G is 2-transitive, (ii) if r = 2, n > 9 and H acts primitively on both of its two nontrivial orbits then G is k-primitive, (iii) if r = 3, n > 13 and H acts primitively on each of its three nontrivial orbits, all of which have size at least 3, then G is (k − 1)-primitive.

An investigation on the existence of projective objects and projective resolutions has been carried out in some categories more general than the category of compact spaces and continuous maps.

This paper shows that the idempotent generalized characters associated with a Raikov System generated by a K2 set in is contained in the closure of the characters D2 in ΔM(D2).

A churning transformation can be defined on probability measures by an infinite sequence of finite permutations of mass. Continuity and absolute continuity of measures are invariants for such transformations but it is shown that certain probability measures whose Fourier-Stieltjes transforms fail to vanish at infinity may be churned into measures whose transforms do vanish in this sense.

The results here concern bijective continous functions from one connected separable n-manifold M to another N. If M has the property that every such function is necessarily a homeomorphism, then M is said to be strongly reversible. Strongly reversible manifolds having only compact boundary components are completely charaterized.

The classification of spaces of matrices of bounded rank is known to depend upon ‘primitive’ spaces, whose structure is considerably restricted. A characterisation of an infinite class of primitive spaces is given. The result is then applied to obtain a complete description of spaces whose matrices have rank at most 3.

One of Ramanujan's unpublished, unproven identities has excited considerable interest over the years. Indeed, no fewer than four proofs have appeared in the literature. The object of this note is to present yet another proof, simpler than the others, relying only on Jacobi's triple product identity.

Then with the aid of a generalized Krasnosel'skii's theorem it has been proved that under conditions exactly analogous to those of Landesman and Lazer there exists u ∈ L2(D) such that L(u)(x) = f(x, u(x)) for ∀x ∈ D. This result is then used to prove the existence of weak solutions of nonlinesr elliptic boundary value problems.

Other abstract results applicable to ordinary and partial differential equations have also been proved.

If Ω is a ring region with starlike boundary components α and β, then we show for each λ > 0 there exists a ring region ω ⊂ Ω with ∂ ω = α ∪ ϒ, α ∩ ϒ = φ such that there is a harmonic function V in ω satisfying (a) V(z) = 0 for z ∈ α, (b) V(z) = 1 for z ∈ ϒ, (c) | grad V(z)| = λ for z ∈ ϒ ∩ Ω. Furthermore, we show when ω is not equal to Ω; that is, that is, there is a non-trival solution.

We examine positive semigroups acting on Banach lattices and operator algebras. In the lattice framework we characterize strict positivity and strict ordering of holomorphic semigroups by irreducibility criteria. In the algebraic setting we derive ergodic criteria for irreducibility and discuss various aspects of strict positivity. Finally we examine invariant states of a C*-dynamical system in which the automorphism group is replaced by a strongly positive semigroup. We demonstrate that ergodic states are characterized by a cluster property despite the absence of a covariant implementation law for the semigroup.

The functional least squares procedure of Chambers and Heathcote for estimating the slope parameter in a linear regression model is analysed. Strong uniform consistency for the family of these estimators is proved together with a necessary and sufficient condition for weak convergence in the space of continuous vector valued functions. These results are then used to develop the asymptotic normality of an adaptive version of the functional least squares estimator with minimum limiting variance.

It is shown that a semigroup is right self-injective and a band of groups if and only if it is isomorphic to the spined product of a self-injective semilattice of groups and a right self-injective band. A necessary and sufficient condition for a band to be right self-injective is given. It is shown that a left [right] self-injective semigroup has the [anti-] representation extension property and the right [left] congruence extension property.

A recursive construction for orthogonal diagonal latin squares, using group divisible designs, is presented. In consequence the numbers of orders for which the existence of such squares is in question is reduced to 72.

We derive some specific inequalities involving absolutely continuous functions and relate them to a norm inequality arising from Banach algebras of functions having bounded k th variation.

Two index laws for fractional integrals and derivatives, which have been extensively studied by E. R. Love, are shown to be special cases of an index law for general powers of certain differential operators, by means of the theory developed in a previous paper. Discussion of the two index laws, which are rather different in appearance, can thus be unified.

A joint spectral theorem for an n-tuple of doubly commuting unbounded normal operators in a Hilbert space is proved by using the techniques of GB*-algebras.

Let T: [0,1] → [0,1] be a map which is given piecewise as a linear fractional map such that T0 = T] = 0 and T'0 < 1. Then T is ergodic and admits an invariant measure which can be calculated explicitly.
