page 237 note 1 It may be noted that Mr. Bolton had no knowledge of the late Mr. Childe-Pemberton's The Earl Bishop, published in 1924; while the Bishop's correspondence, on the other hand, betrays no trace of his association with Soane (op. cit. p. 227).
page 238 note 1 A letter of Henry Parke's, written on May 7th, 1821 (p. 290), may also be noted, in which he speaks of the discovery by the French Ambassador of the pavement of the temple of Jupiter Tonans (Vespasian) and in a tolerably perfect state: ‘The workmen,’ he adds, ‘are also proceeding to clear the Campo Vaccino of the great heap of earth left there by the French.’ Of this particular excavation I have so far found no other record.
page 238 note 2 The transcription is generally correct: but ‘port of La Stata’ (p. 267) should be ‘post of La Storta,’ the first post out of Rome by the Via Cassia.
page 238 note 3 See P.B.S.R. vi, 503 sqq.: Bolton, p. 491. Two lots of his drawings, one of Italian architecture and interiors, the other containing figments from the antique and designs of Tatham's own buildings, from the library of Mrs. J. Richmond, were sold at Sotheby's on February 14th, 1929 (lots 727, 728).
