1 This review was originally written for Gnomon and dispatched to the Editors of that periodical in March, 1939. After an interval of six months no proofs had been received. On the other hand, when it was learned in October, 1939, that a review of M. Durry's work promised to the Journal would not materialise, it was decided to publish instead Mr. Syme's contribution.—ED.
