^{page 112 note 1} Professor Haverfield informs me that the general policy of town-foundations which seems to have been followed in Gaulish lands by Augustus at the time when Turin was founded by him (B.C. 28), rather suggests that the native capital of the Taurini was not on the site of Augusta Taurinorum. For instance, Autun (Augustodunum) in southern Gaul was the successor to the native capital of the Aedui, Bibracte, but it was 12 miles from it and was an entirely new town (see Haverfield, Town-planning, p. 122).
