Taxonomic synonymy, what is it and why?

Extract
During the 1991 ostracodologists' symposium in Australia, I heard a young man in the seat across the aisle tell his companion, “I hope that my new species will never be placed in synonymy.” I turned to him and explained that there is neither shame nor crime in having a species placed in synonymy by another scientist.
