Bomburodon, a new name for the Paleocene mammal Bomburia Van Valen, 1978
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 20 May 2016
Extract
Van Valen (1978) provided the name Bomburia for an early Paleocene mammal (mioclaenid) from New Mexico. Christian F. Kammerer has kindly informed us that the name Bomburia Van Valen, 1978 (December), is the name of an extant hymenopteran, Bomburia Hedqvist, 1978 (July). We propose the new name Bomburodon (type species Ellipsodon priscus Matthew, 1937) as a replacement name for Bomburia. Bomburodon is named for Bombur, a fat dwarf in J. R. R. Tolkien's “The Hobbit” (1937) and “The Fellowship of the Ring” (1954–1955) and odon, tooth (Greek).
