The governing equations of a model of rotating generalized thermoelastic diffusion in an isotropic medium with temperature-dependent mechanical properties are formulated in context of Lord-Shulman theory of generalized thermoelasticity. The modulus of elasticity is taken as a linear function of reference temperature. The solution of the governing equations indicates the existence of four coupled plane waves in x-z plane. The reflection of plane waves from the free surface of a rotating temperature-dependent thermoelastic solid half-space with diffusion is considered. The required boundary conditions are satisfied by the appropriate potentials for incident and reflected waves in the half-space to obtain a system of four non-homogeneous equations in the reflection coefficients. The expressions for energy ratios of the reflected waves are also obtained. The reflection coefficients and energy ratios are found to depend upon the angle of incidence, reference temperature, thermodiffusion and rotation parameters. Aluminum material is modeled as the half-space to compute the absolute values of the reflection coefficients and the energy ratios. Effects of temperature dependence and rotation parameters on the reflection coefficients and energy ratios are shown graphically for a certain range of the angle of incidence of the incident plane wave.

In this study, a novel procedure has been developed for predicting the notched strengths of composite plates each with a center hole. In this approach, the stress distribution of a composite plate with a center hole is first obtained by a finite element analysis, in which the experimental notched strength is applied at the boundary of the finite element model. Secondly, the point stress criterion (PSC) is used to find the characteristic length for each plate with different size of hole by an interpolation of the finite element analysis results. The characteristic length is then expressed as an empirical function of the hole size as well as the width of the plate. Finally, the notched strengths of composite plates are predicted based on the empirical function and the finite element analysis results incorporated with the principle of superposition in elasticity. For validation, three different cases from the literatures are adopted for comparison. It is shown that the predicted notched strengths by this new methodology agree well with both the experimental results and the results from analytical solutions based PSC.

The aim of current research is to investigate numerically the fluid dynamics of lobe pumps and typical factors which could impact on performance of the pump including profile of rotor surface, number of lobes, gap size between rotor and casing, and clearance between two rotors, etc. The circular and epicycloidal curves are used to generate profiles for rotor surface, while the complex flow phenomena inside the pump are simulated by dynamic mesh technique. With wide range of investigated speed from 1000 to 5000rpm, the study produces significant information on flow pattern, velocity and pressure fields. The advantage of epicycloidal pumps over circular ones has been demonstrated via characteristic curve which performs pressure head versus rotational speed. Meanwhile the analysis has proved that multilobes, three and four lobes, do not increase performance of the pump but provide more stable output and higher capacity compared with two-lobe pumps. The results confirm great impact of gap size between rotor and casing wall on the pump efficiency. Decrease of the gap from 1.25mm down to 0.5mm produces about 425% increasing of pressure head. In addition, it has been also proved that the clearance between two rotors could be varied from 0.12mm to 0.15mm without much effect on performance of the pump.

The shapes of a growing or decaying bubble entrapped by a solidification front are predicted in this work. The bubble results from supersaturation of a dissolved gas in the liquid ahead of the solidification front. Pore formation and its shape in solid are one of the most critical factors affecting properties, microstructure, and stresses in materials. In this study, the bubble and pore shapes entrapped in solid can be described by a three-dimensional phase diagram, obtained from perturbation solutions of Young-Laplace equation governing the tiny bubble shape in the literature. The predicted growth and entrapment of a microbubble as a pore in solid are found to agree with experimental data. This work thus provides a realistic prediction of the general growth of the pore shape as a function of different working parameters.

The flow structure in the shear layer and in the recirculation zone of a skimming flow downstream of a vertical drop without end-sill measured using high speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV) and flow visualization method is presented. The interface between the sliding jet and the recirculation zone (zone below sliding jet) was enhanced through non-ventilation condition between the drop structure and the jet. The flow field measured through HSPIV was used to represent the characteristics of mean streamwise velocity in the shear layer and mean horizontal velocity in the recirculation zone. With the growth of shear layer as the jet slides down over the recirculation zone, the momentum exchange from the sliding jet into the recirculation zone via the shear layer increases along with energy loss. Hence, it was observed that the amount of energy dissipated in the skimming flow at the drop structure without ventilation is greater than that with ventilation by an average value of 50% for Yc / H ≥ 0.2 (where Yc = critical depth and H = drop height). However, the flow structure in the recirculation zone is found to be analogous to that of turbulent plane wall jet. The nonlinear regression analysis is used to fit the regressed velocity profiles to the measured HSPIV mean velocity distributions. Further, the appropriate characteristic velocity and length scales are selected to attain the unique similarity profiles both in the shear layer and in the recirculation zone of the skimming flow. The selection of the characteristic scales is also discussed. The similarity profiles are well comparable with those of napped flow without end-sill and with ventilation as well as of skimming flow with end-sill and without ventilation. It is interesting to observe that, the proposed similarity profiles for the shear layer also map the data of backward-facing step flow and cavity shear flow. In addition, the turbulence characteristics in the shear layer, including turbulence intensities, turbulent kinetic energy, viscous and Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulence energy-budget balance, are illustrated in detail. From the variation of turbulence production it is observed that near the drop structure the energy exchange is from the chaotic recirculation zone to the sliding-jet flow, while in the later part it is reversed. Furthermore, the analysis of turbulence energy-budget balance indicates very significant role of turbulence production, pressure diffusion and turbulence diffusion as compared with turbulence advection that has very minor role in turbulence energy-budget balance for the central part of the shear layer.

A problem of thermal instability of a compressible micropolar fluid layer heated from below in the presence of suspended particles has been investigated. Dispersion relation is derived and Rayleigh number curve is then plotted against the wavenumber at different values of compressibility parameter for a model example. Compressibility is found to be responsible to destabilize the system in the presence and absence of suspended particles for both stationary and over stationary convection.

Ordered data point cloud obtained by laser-scanning, image processing or contact digitizing techniques is widely used for reconstructing a cross section profile in the field of reverse engineering. In this research, a comprehensive algorithm for reconstruction of 2D profile is developed based on NURBS parametric curve theory. In this regard, the line, arc and B-spline segments are firstly extracted from the set of ordered data points using a developed segment detection algorithm. Then, the final profile is reconstructed using the newly proposed algorithm of constrained local fitting which approximates these segments by NURBS curves with appropriate geometric continuity conditions. The validity, capability and functionality of the developed method are investigated by some practical case studies. Results show that developed algorithm can be integrated and improve the functionality of exiting reverse engineering systems.

Using a piezoelectric unimorph vibrator with constraint-tuning modified-mode (CTMM) mechanism, a novel design of a thin-disc ultrasonic actuator was developed to drive an optical sled. The theoretical estimation of in-plane wave propagation on a thin disc is introduced to explain the novel actuating mechanism, via a modal expansion technique and modal participation factors. Furthermore, the approximate wave propagations could be illustrated by the practical estimated wave equations in this study. Applying four screws at the exact distribution of angles on the thin-disc vibrator, the actuating mechanism of ultrasonic modified modes is generated and propagated. The in-plane vibration modes could be tuned by these desired screw constraints on the piezoelectric vibrator. The ultrasonic actuator offers the output force to drive an optical sled by friction contact in bilateral motions. To implement the equilibrium structure force in bilateral directions, natural and forced analysis as well as impedance comparison of FEM software ANSYS are also introduced into the constrained design. Hence, there are two various modified modes chosen at the different resonant frequencies within the electromechanical coupling of piezoelectric material to pursue more efficiency in energy conversion. Experimental results have demonstrated consistency with the approximate theoretical approach of the in-plane wave propagation and simulations based on the concept of constrained-tuning modified modes.

In this paper, the numerical study of compressible flow around an airfoil is presented. The flow is analyzed in steady state for subsonic, transonic and even in the supersonic regimes at different angles of attack. In finite-volume method convective fluxes are calculated and compared by two schemes. Modified Jameson flux scheme based on flux averaging with pressure correction is used. Modified Roe scheme which is one of the characteristics-based schemes, with modification in calculation of Jacobian matrix based on Mach number is implemented. Second-order accuracy is used with artificial dissipation to overcome numerical oscillations. The fifth-order Runge–Kutta scheme is used for time discretization. A proper boundary condition based on characteristics is applied. Numerical experiments are performed on the NACA 0012 and also NACA 4412 airfoils. The results confirm the superiority of modified upwind Roe scheme regarding the accuracy, stability and convergence. Results are compared to available results in literature and a good agreement is noticed.

In this article, the dynamic response in a multilayered medium is analyzed by Laplace transform technique. The thickness and material constant in each layer are different. The medium is subjected an uniformly distributed loading at the upper surface, and the bottom surface is assumed to be traction-free. The analytical solutions are presented in the transform domain and the numerical Laplace inversion (Durbin's formula) is performed to obtain the transient response in time domain. The effective material concept is usually used to simplify multilayered media in static analysis. The numerical calculations of the transient responses for randomly distributed, periodically distributed, and continuously distributed multilayered media are performed to investigate if the effective material concept is suitable for dynamic analysis.

This paper proposes a complete basis set for analyzing elastic wave scattering in half-space. The half-space is an isotropic, linear, and homogeneous medium except for a finite inhomogeneity. The wave bases are obtained by combining buried source functions and their reflected counter-waves generated from the infinite-plane boundary. The source functions are the vector wave functions of infinite-space. Based on the source functions expressed in the Fourier expansion form, the reflected counter-waves are easily obtained by solving the infinite-plane boundary conditions. Few representations adopt Wely's integration, but the Fourier expansion is developed from it and applied to decouple the angular-differential terms of the vector wave functions. In addition to the scattering of the finite inhomogeneity, the transition matrix method is extended to express the surface boundary conditions. For the numerical application in this paper, the P- and the SV- waves are assumed as the incoming fields. As an example, this paper computes stress concentrations around a cavity. The steepest-descent path method yielding the optimum integral paths is used to ensure the numerical convergence of the wave bases in the Fourier expansion. The resultant patterns from these approaches are compared with those obtained from numerical simulations.

In an air foil bearing analysis the model is usually solved iteratively due in part to the nonlinearity of the modeling Reynolds equation and the compliance of the bearing surface. The solution procedure requires a multiple-level-deep nested iteration, which involves extended solution time and convergence difficulty. In this study, a simple air foil bearing model is used and the compressible-fluid Reynolds equation for modeling gas lubrication is linearized by Newton's method. The discretized equation is solved by one of the two parallel iterative methods, red-black or strip partition successive-over-relaxation (SOR) method. The parallel programming is conducted using OpenMP programming in an eight-core work-station. Then, a numerical damping scheme for the film-profile convergence is presented. Finally, a root-finding process is conducted to iteratively attain the eccentricity of the bearing for a given load. It is found that the numerical damping step is crucial, which allows the use of a larger relaxation factor to have a fast rate of convergence. Both the parallel SOR methods are easy to implement and the red-black SOR method exhibits better efficiency in the studied cases. This study presents a parallel computing scheme for analyzing air foil bearing of bump-type by today's shared-memory multicore platforms.

A series solution based on the mild-slope equation is produced in this study of wave scattering produced by a circular cylindrical island mounted on an axi-symmetrical shoal. The solution is presumed to be a Fourier cosine expansion with variable coefficients in the radial direction on account of the symmetric scattering field, which translates the original 2-D boundary-value problem to a 1-D one in which an ordinary differential equation is in effect treated. Approximations to the coefficients of the governing equation with the Taylor expansions enable the use of the Frobenius method, and consequently the solution is obtained in a combined Fourier and power series. For verification, the present method is mainly compared with Zhu and Zhang's [1] analytical solution of the linearised shallow water equation for a conical shoal, and with a different analytical solution of the mild-slope equation developed by Liu et al. [2] for a paraboloidal shoal. Fine agreements are achieved. The present method is then used to investigate the variation pattern of the wave run-up when the shoal profile varies from conical to paraboloidal, and some interesting phenomena are observed.

Human aortic valve is made of thin collagen type tissue. The three leaflets open and close under fluid forces exerted upon them. To simulate the hemodynamic characteristics of the blood flow, ANSYS CFX10.0 software was utilized to analyze the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. With a quasi-steady analysis model, we predict values of the blood velocity and the wall shear stress both over the valve leaflets and the endothelial lining. In addition, investigation on fluid dynamic of a heart valve supposed suffering prolapsed disease has been also conducted, and compared with normal valve. Analysis results highlight that leaflet opening situation and valve geometry affect the shear stress distribution and vortex flow regime. Maximum shear stress takes place near the center of leaflet trailing edge at the very beginning of systolic phase with value of 7.093N/m2. At peak systole, the maximum wall shear stress distributes near the aortic root where jet impingement takes place. Current study also demonstrated the interactive impact between low and high wall shear stress on relation to heart valve disease.

A study of elasto-plastic deformation of circular cylindrical shells subjected to internal electromagnetic forces is presented in this paper. The five governing equations in terms of resultant forces and resultant moments with respect to basic displacement vector components u, v and w are used. Theoretical formulations, based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), take into consideration transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The deformation theory of plasticity is employed for constitutive equations. The cylinders are composed of an elastic-plastic material with the von Mises yield criteria and non-linear plastic behaviour. Galerkin method is employed to convert the partial differential equations (PDEs) to ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The Newmark family of methods is used to numerically time integration of system of coupled second order ODEs. In order to prove the validity of the presented method and the solving process, the results obtained with the present analysis are compared with a set of available data. Good agreement observed between the results of the two approaches. Certainly, the aim of this paper is to create a more reliable and precise mathematical model of hollow-cylinders to avoid performing several experiments.

The fluid sloshing behavior in a propellant tank is a major concern for the control and stabilization of a spacecraft. This research aims to investigate the attitude-adjustment-induced sloshing phenomenon in a satellite propellant tank under microgravities. In the analysis, the complicated interfacial flow was simulated using the transient three-dimensional conservation equations of mass and momentum with treatment of the surface tension effect at the interface boundary by the continuum surface force (CSF) model. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method in conjunction with the piecewise linear interface construction (PLIC) technique was also utilized to describe the fluid interface motions. Computations were performed to simulate the sloshing process in the FORMOSAT-2 propellant tank for determining the impact disturbance properties generated during the pitch maneuver. Because the predicted disturbance moments were well below the design control moments, the attitude-adjustment-induced sloshing effect would not cause any performance deterioration for satisfactory attitude modification of the satellite.

Based on expansion technique, the dynamic stress concentration of a cylindrical cavity buried in an elastic half-plane is studied in the paper. The cavity and the half-plane are excited by a harmonic standing Goodier-Bishop stress wave which, as a result of taking the normalized frequency tends to zero, is equivalent to a simple uniform static tension parallel to the ground surface. In the formulation, the scattered waves are represented by a series expansion, and their associated modal fields of the expansion satisfy the boundary conditions on the ground surface as well as the radiation condition at infinity. As a consequence, the scattering problem is reduced to the determination of the expansion coefficients by matching the boundary conditions on the cavity. The numerical technique based on the steepest descent method is used to calculate the integral representation of potential functions in wave-number domain. Numerical results for the dynamic hoop stresses around the wall of the cavity and the dynamic stress concentration factors with various buried depth and excitation frequencies are presented.

In this study, the initial soil suction of as-compacted clayey soils was evaluated for various compaction conditions, covering a wide range of compaction energy and molding water content. The soil specimens were prepared by impact compaction under three levels of compaction energy. The filter paper method was used to measure the initial soil suction of as-compacted specimens. Test results indicate that the relationship between the soil suction and the molding water content is bilinear under three different compaction energies. However, the effect of compaction energy on soil suction is different for the soils with different amounts of clay fraction and is elucidated by the macro soil properties. The change of soil suction due to different compaction energies can be predicted by the void ratio and the degree of saturation.

In this study, a spray cooling device for electronic components was investigated. Dielectric fuid (FC-72) was sprayed at 50°C through five nozzles (4.243mm spacing). The nozzles are of diameters 0.17, 0.23 or 0.41mm. Volume flow rate varied from 24.5 to 99.1ml/min. Two grooved surfaces and a smooth surface were tested, and the heated area was 12 × 12mm2. The larger nozzles yielded greater heat transfer coefficients at high heat fluxes (300 ∼ 600kW/m2). However, smaller nozzles result in greater dry-out heat fluxes and greater heat transfer coefficients at heat flux < 300kW/m2. The C4 surface, having parallel grooves of 0.4mm depth, improved the spray cooling performance by up to 80% as compared with the smooth suface. Its thermal resistance is 0.11 ∼ 0.12K/W at 99.1ml/min flow rate, in the range of 85 ∼ 130W heat input. A new correlation of spray cooling, accounting for the contributions of nucleate boiling and spray convection, is proposed. For data of FC-72 in the range of Re = 856 ∼ 6188, Bo = 0.19 ∼ 5.70, We = 25.2 ∼ 3541.3, the predicted h-values agree with experimental data of the smooth surface within ±25%.

The clinical urination assist measures are usually taken to overcome the neurogenic bladder difficult to cure, but easily cause patients bladder stones, urinary system infection and other complications. To solve the problem of the urination assist of neurogenic bladder, a bladder power pump (BPP) driven by external electromagnet was proposed in this study according to the structure and micturition mechanism of human urinary bladder. The mathematic models of the BPP were established based on the theories of electromagnetics and fluid dynamics. A simulated experiment system with a bladder physical model for simulating human urinary system was designed according to the similarity criterion of fluid dynamincs. The micturition performance of the BPP was investigated by simulation and experiment. The results showed that the intravesical pressure and urine flow rate of the bladder physical model can be controlled by adjusting electromagnet exciting current. The micturition performance of the BPP is basically accordant with that of human urinary bladder detrusor. The established mathematic models are simple and practicable, which can provide the theoretical guidance for the performance analysis and structural optimization design of the BPP.
