In 1880, the famous Chilean politician and historian, Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna, wrote:
There does not exist in the whole globe a country whose prosperity or adversity has a more direct influence as regards Chile than that which affects the welfare of the vast empire of Great Britain, the modern Rome [Chilean Times, 1880].
