1 The initial episode of the Iliad is so close-knit that it is not clear whether it requires more than one day. As we do not know how long was the journey from Chrysa to the Plain of Troy, we cannot postulate a whole day for the coming of Chryses, before that on which he met the Achaeans, and we are precluded from reckoning the duration of his return journey because he prayed to Apollo from the beach, (34, 35).
