We use experiments to study the evolution of bubble clusters in a swarm of freely rising, deformable bubbles. A new machine learning-aided algorithm allows us to identify and track bubbles in clusters and measure the cluster lifetimes. The results indicate that contamination in the carrier liquid can enhance the formation of bubble clusters and prolong the cluster lifetimes. The mean bubble rise velocities conditioned on the bubble cluster size are also explored, and we find a positive correlation between the cluster size and the rise speed of the bubbles in the cluster, with clustered bubbles rising up to $20\,\%$ faster than unclustered bubbles.

We report on an experimental study of a device comprising an array of submerged, inverted and periodic cylindrical pendula (resonators), whose objective is the attenuation of surface gravity waves. The idea is inspired by the concept of metamaterials, i.e. engineered structures designed to interact with waves and manipulate their propagation properties. The study is performed in a wave flume where waves are excited in a wide range of frequencies. We explore various configurations of the device, calculating the transmitted, reflected and dissipated energy of the waves. If the incoming wave frequencies are sufficiently close to the natural frequency of the pendula, we find a considerable wave attenuation effect. This behaviour is enhanced by the number of resonators in the array. Moreover, the device is also capable of reflecting the energy of selected frequencies of the incoming waves. These frequencies, predicted by a generalized Bragg scattering mechanism, depend on the spacing between the resonators. The presented results show promise for the development of an environmentally sustainable device for mitigating waves in coastal zones.

We consider the dynamics of a set of reduced equations describing the evolution of a magnetised, rotating stably stratified fluid layer, atop a stagnant dense, perfectly conducting layer. We consider two closely related models. In the first, the layer has, above it, relatively light fluid where the magnetic pressure is much larger than the gas pressure, and the magnetic field is largely force-free. In the second model, the magnetic field is constrained to lie within the dynamical layer by the implementation of a model diffusion operator for the magnetic field. The model derivation proceeds by assuming that the horizontal velocity and the horizontal magnetic field are independent of the vertical coordinate, whilst the vertical components in the layer have a linear dependence on height. The full system comprises evolution equations for the magnetic field, horizontal velocity and height field together with a linear elliptic equation for the vertically integrated non-hydrostatic pressure. In the magneto-hydrostatic limit, these equations simplify to equations of shallow-water type. Numerical solutions for both models are provided for the fiducial case of a Gaussian vortex interacting with a magnetic field. The solutions are shown to differ negligibly. We investigate how the interaction of the vortex changes in response to the magnetic Reynolds number ${Rm}$, the Rossby deformation radius $L_D$, and a Coriolis buoyancy frequency ratio $f/N$ measuring the significance of non-hydrostatic effects. The magneto-hydrostatic limit corresponds to $f/N\to 0$.

We study the stability and collapse of holes at the wall in liquid layers on circular bounded containers with various wettabilities. Three distinct wetting modes of the hole are observed, which are related to the wettability of the container: when the substrate and the inner wall of the container are superhydrophobic, a stable hole remains as the liquid volume is continuously increased until the liquid layer covers the entire substrate; when the substrate and the inner wall are hydrophobic, an eye-shaped hole remains stable as the projected area of the hole exceeds a critical value $A_c$, however, the hole collapses if the liquid volume is further increased; when the substrate is superhydrophobic but the wall is hydrophilic, on increasing the liquid volume, the hole suddenly transfers into a circular hole and is pushed against the wall, leaving the hole dwelling around the centre of the container. Theoretical analyses and numerical simulations are conducted to establish the phase diagram for different wetting modes. It is found that, in the second mode, $A_c$ increases with the size of the container but decreases with the contact angle of the substrate and the wall. Furthermore, we experimentally investigate the dynamics of the hole. The time evolution of the area of the hole obeys a scaling relationship $A \sim (t_0 - t)^{1.1}$ after the hole collapses at time $t_0$.

In the present work, we study the flow field around, and forces acting on, a circular cylinder with an attached flexible splitter plate/flap. Two cases of flap length ($L/D$), namely, $L/D = 5$ and $L/D = 2$ have been investigated focusing on the effect of variations in flap flexural rigidity, $EI$. We find that for a range of $EI$ and Reynolds numbers $Re = UD/\nu$, a non-dimensional bending stiffness $K^{\ast }=EI/((1/2)\rho U^2 L^3)$ collapses flap motion and forces on the system well, as long as $Re>5000$. In the $L/D = 5$ flap case, two periodic flap deformation regimes in the form of travelling waves are identified (modes I and II), with mode I occurring at $K^{\ast } \approx 1.5\times 10^{-3}$ and mode II at lower $K^{\ast }$ values ($K^{\ast }<3\times 10^{-5}$). In the $L/D = 2$ flap case, we find a richer set of flapping modes (modes A, B, C and D) that are differentiated by their flapping characteristics (symmetric/asymmetric and amplitude). Force measurements show that the largest drag reduction occurs in mode I ($L/D = 5$) and mode C ($L/D = 2$), which also correspond to the lowest lift and wake fluctuations, with the mode C wake fluctuations being lower than even the rigid splitter plate case. In contrast, the highest fluctuating lift, in both $L/D$ cases, occurs at higher $K^{\ast }$, when the wake frequency is close to the first structural bending mode frequency of the flap. The observed rich range of flap/splitter plate dynamics could be useful for applications such as drag reduction, vibration suppression, reduction of wake fluctuations and energy harvesting.

Perturbed rapidly rotating flows are dominated by inertial oscillations, with restricted group velocity directions, due to the restorative nature of the Coriolis force. In containers with some boundaries oblique to the rotation axis, the inertial oscillations may focus upon reflections, whereby their energy increases whilst their wavelength decreases and their trajectories focus onto attractor regions. In a linear inviscid setting, these attractors are Delta-like distributions. The linear inviscid setting is obtained formally by setting both Ekman number ${E}$ (ratio of inertial to viscous time scales) and Rossby number ${Ro}$ (non-dimensional amplitude of the forcing that drives the inertial oscillations) to zero. These settings raise fundamental questions, in particular concerning the nature of energy dissipation in the vanishing Ekman number regime. Here, we consider a simple container geometry, a rectangular cuboid, in which the direction of the rotation axis is oblique to four of its walls, subject to librational forcing (small-amplitude harmonic oscillations of the rotation rate). This geometry allows for accurate and efficient direct numerical simulations of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with no-slip boundary conditions using a spectral-Galerkin spatial discretisation along with a third-order temporal discretisation. Solutions with Ekman and Rossby numbers as small as ${E}={Ro}=10^{-8}$ reveal many details of how the inertial oscillations focus, at the libration frequency considered, onto attractors, and how the focusing leads to increased localised nonlinear and dissipative processes as ${E}$ and ${Ro}$ are reduced. Even for extremely small forcing amplitudes, nonlinear effects have important dynamic consequences for the attractors.

Hydrodynamic approaches that treat granular materials as a continuum via the homogenization of discrete flow properties have become viable options for efficient predictions of bulk flow behaviours. However, simplified boundary conditions in computational fluid dynamics are often adopted, which have difficulty in describing the complex stick–slip phenomenon at the boundaries. This paper extends the lattice Boltzmann method for granular flow simulations by incorporating a novel frictional boundary condition. The wall slip velocity is first calculated based on the shear rate limited by the Coulomb friction, followed by the reconstruction of unknown density distribution functions through a modified bounce-back scheme. Validation is performed against a unique plane Couette flow configuration, and the analytical solutions for the flow velocity profile and the wall slip velocity, as functions of the friction coefficient, are reproduced by the numerical model. The transition between no-slip and partial-slip regimes is captured well, but the convergence rate drops from second order to first order when slip occurs. The rheological parameters and the basal friction coefficient are calibrated further against the discrete element simulation of a square granular column collapsing over a horizontal bottom plane. It is found that the calibrated continuum model can predict other granular column collapses with different initial aspect ratios and slope inclination angles, including the basal slip and the complex internal flow structures, without any further adjustments to the model parameters. This highlights the generalization ability of the numerical model, which has a wide range of application in granular flow predictions and controls.

A series of laboratory experiments are reported in which a continuous stream of bubbles rise from a small source at the base of a tank of water. Using different nozzles, bubble sizes $d$ ranging from 1.2 to 11.6 mm were produced for a number of gas volume fluxes, $Q_b$, ranging between 1.1 and $21.1\times 10^{-6}\ {\rm m}^3\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Within a small distance from the source, the slip speed of these bubbles exceeds the speed of the equivalent single-phase plume with the same buoyancy flux, leading to formation of what we refer to as the ‘slip plume’ regime. Through a combination of high-speed photography, coupled with flow visualisation in the plume and the ambient fluid using dye, we find that the bubble speed and the fluid speed remain nearly constant with height, with the maximum fluid speed being of order $0.30\pm 0.03$ of the bubble speed. Using the filling box method, we also find that the net fluid volume flux in the slip plume increases linearly with distance from the source at a rate $Q_l = \lambda Bz/v_s^2$, where $B$ is the buoyancy flux of the gas, $v_s$ the rise speed of the gas bubbles, $z$ the distance above the source and $\lambda$ is a constant related to the dimensionless volume of fluid in the wake of each bubble. This slip-dominated flow regime can be understood in terms of kinetic energy imparted to the fluid as the bubbles rise and release potential energy. Further experiments with particle-laden plumes illustrate similar scalings for the volume flux in a particle-driven slip plume once the slip speed of the particles exceeds the bulk speed of the equivalent single-phase buoyant plume with the same buoyancy flux. Near the source the slip speed may be smaller than the plume speed, and the flow follows the classical model for a turbulent buoyant plume, with the transition to the slip regime occurring at a distance $z^*\approx (32\pm 5)\lambda ^{3/2} B/v_s^3$ from the source, where the dimensionless parameter $\lambda$ relates to the dimensionless volume of the fluid wake, which we find varies with the Reynolds number of the particles.

We investigate the role of pressure, via its Hessian tensor ${\boldsymbol {H}}$, on amplification of vorticity and strain-rate and contrast it with other inviscid nonlinear mechanisms. Results are obtained from direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence with Taylor-scale Reynolds number in the range 140–1300. Decomposing ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ into local isotropic (${\boldsymbol {H}}^{I}$) and non-local deviatoric (${\boldsymbol {H}}^{D}$) components reveals that ${\boldsymbol {H}}^{I}$ depletes vortex stretching, whereas ${\boldsymbol {H}}^{D}$ enables it, with the former slightly stronger. The resulting inhibition is significantly weaker than the nonlinear mechanism which always enables vortex stretching. However, in regions of intense vorticity, identified using conditional statistics, contribution from ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ prevails over nonlinearity, leading to overall depletion of vortex stretching. We also observe near-perfect alignment between vorticity and the eigenvector of ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ corresponding to the smallest eigenvalue, which conforms with well-known vortex-tubes. We discuss the connection between this depletion, essentially due to (local) ${\boldsymbol {H}}^{I}$, and recently identified self-attenuation mechanism (Buaria et al., Nat. Commun., vol. 11, 2020, p. 5852), whereby intense vorticity is locally attenuated through inviscid effects. In contrast, the influence of ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ on strain-amplification is weak. It opposes strain self-amplification, together with vortex stretching, but its effect is much weaker than vortex stretching. Correspondingly, the eigenvectors of strain and ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ do not exhibit any strong alignments. For all results, the dependence on Reynolds number is very weak. In addition to the fundamental insights, our work provides useful data and validation benchmarks for future modelling endeavours, for instance in Lagrangian modelling of velocity gradient dynamics, where conditional ${\boldsymbol {H}}$ is explicitly modelled.

Thermocapillary droplets with internal thermal singularities have potential applications in drug delivery and cell analysis. Inspired by the work of Pak et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 753, 2014, pp. 535–552), which was investigated for a surfactant-laden non-deformable droplet in an isothermal Poiseuille flow, we have explored the droplet dynamics by taking account of additional internal thermal singularities, namely monopole and dipole. A generalized mathematical model is developed, which is solved by using the solenoidal decomposition to describe the flow field in any arbitrary Stokes flow, and results are shown extensively for the case of a non-isothermal Poiseuille flow. Under small Péclet number ($Pe_s$) limit, the droplet with an off-centred monopole or a dipole oriented along the flow direction shows cross-stream migration at $O(Pe_s^2)$. However, a dipole oriented perpendicular to the flow direction results in an $O(1)$ effect due to thermocapillarity, and from $O(Pe_s)$ onwards, we observe the combined impact of thermocapillary and surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses. As a surprise, we see cross-stream migration of the droplet from the Poiseuille flow centreline in a non-isothermal field, in contrast to existing findings which rule out any cross-stream migration. We show the trade-off between thermal Marangoni number ($Ma_T$) and surfactant Marangoni number ($Ma_\varGamma$). Our findings on droplet dynamics inspire new possibilities for microfluidics-based design.

A macroscale floating object moving downwards will encounter an increasing buoyancy force exerted by the liquid. However, considering the surface tension and the deformed meniscus, we find an exotic floating object of specific shape that withstands a constant total force exerted by the liquid when it moves vertically and slowly. This constant total force consists of the surface tension force and the hydrostatic pressure force, from which a model to determine the shape of the exotic floating object is proposed. Results show that there exist three types of exotic floating objects in both the two-dimensional symmetric and axisymmetric cases, dependent on their concavity and convexity. To ensure that the menisci around the exotic floating objects can be sustained in practice, the stabilities of these menisci are checked. Apart from the meniscus stabilities (of liquid surfaces), the floating stabilities (of solid objects) are also studied. It is demonstrated that the exotic floating object remains in a critical state of floating stabilities no matter where this object locates vertically, from which a new method to predict the floating stabilities for general floating objects of arbitrary shape is put forward, based on the contact angle and the geometrical parameters at the contact point. With the new method, the floating stabilities can be predicted conveniently, without performing an extra force analysis.

This work presents an experimental investigation focused on the analysis of aerodynamic properties between two interacting spheres in a supersonic rarefied flow. Atmospheric re-entries of space debris, whether natural or man-made, begin at altitude 120 km, and observations of historical re-entries have shown that fragmentation occurs between 90 and 50 km. The resulting fragments interact with each other, altering their own trajectories while traversing the different flow regimes between the free molecular and continuum regimes. This study focuses on the intermediate slip regime, where viscous effects of varying magnitude can influence the nature of the interactions of the shocks and modify them from the already known behaviour in the continuum regime. Specifically, this study examines how two spheres interact with each other upon re-entry into the atmosphere, focusing particularly on the six types of shock/shock interactions identified by Edney. The experiments were performed in the MARHy wind tunnel, in a steady Mach 4 laminar flow with static pressure 2.67 Pa. To highlight the differences between the six types of interferences, a variety of set-ups and devices were used: flow-field visualization, aerodynamic forces (through two diagnoses, aerodynamic balance and the swinging sphere technique) and wall pressure measurements. Results demonstrate the identification of differences according to the type of interference observed, showing in particular the viscous effect of rarefied flows by making a comparison with the continuum regime.

Interactions between oblique second mode and oblique waves at a high-speed boundary at Mach 4.5 are studied using linear stability theory, nonlinear parabolized stability equations (NPSE) and direct numerical simulation (DNS). Parametric analysis based on the NPSE suggests that the oblique second mode can amplify both the oblique first and second modes, with the former experiencing a higher amplification. Our analysis reveals that the mean-flow distortion and difference mode contribute to this enhancement, with the latter exerting a key influence through the parametric resonance process. Kinetic energy transfer analysis demonstrates that the oblique waves gain energy from the mean flow, rather than from the oblique second mode. Furthermore, we find that the mechanism underlying the interaction between a pair of second oblique waves and a single oblique wave is similar to that between an oblique second mode and an oblique wave, as the steady modes generated by the pair of oblique second modes have a limited impact on the oblique wave. Finally, DNS confirms the validity of two transition paths proposed in this study based on the NPSE results. The first path suggests that a pair of low-amplitude second oblique waves alone are insufficient to cause oblique breakdown, but the introduction of a pair of low-amplitude damping first oblique modes could lead to boundary layer breakdown. The second path involves the formation of a domino-like effect through the combination of different types of oblique waves with the appropriate parameters. These two nonlinear paths can lead to a fully developed turbulent boundary layer.

Shear instabilities at the interface of two fluids, such as classical Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), is the precursor of interface destabilization, leading to fluid fragmentation critical in a wide range of applications. While many insights into such instabilities are derived for steady background forcing flow, unsteady impulse flows are ubiquitous in environmental and physiological processes. Yet, little is understood on how unsteadiness shapes the initial interface amplification necessary for the onset of its topological change enabling subsequent fragmentation. In this combined theoretical, numerical and experimental study, we focus on an air-on-liquid interface exposed to canonical unsteady shear flow profiles. Evolution of the perturbed interface is formulated theoretically as an impulse-driven initial value problem using both linearized potential flow and nonlinear boundary integral methods. We show that the unsteady airflow forcing can amplify the interface's inherent gravity–capillary wave, up to wave-breaking transition, even if the configuration is classically KH stable. For impulses much shorter than the gravity–capillary wave period, it is the cumulative action, akin to total energy, that determines amplification, independent of the details of the impulse profile. However, for longer impulses, the details of the impulse profile become important. In this limit, akin to a resonance, it is the entangled history of the interaction of the forcing, i.e. the impulse, that changes rapidly in amplitude, and the response of the oscillating interface that matters. The insights gained are discussed and experimentally illustrated in the context of interface distortion and destabilization relevant for upper respiratory mucosalivary fluid fragmentation in violent exhalations.

In systems where the standard $\alpha$ effect is inoperative, one often explains the existence of mean magnetic fields by invoking the ‘incoherent $\alpha$ effect’, which appeals to fluctuations of the mean kinetic helicity at a mesoscale. Most previous studies, while considering fluctuations in the mean kinetic helicity, treated the mean turbulent kinetic energy at the mesoscale as a constant, despite the fact that both these quantities involve second-order velocity correlations. The mean turbulent kinetic energy affects the mean magnetic field through both turbulent diffusion and turbulent diamagnetism. In this work, we use a double-averaging procedure to analytically show that fluctuations of the mean turbulent kinetic energy at the mesoscale (giving rise to $\eta$-fluctuations at the mesoscale, where the scalar $\eta$ is the turbulent diffusivity) can lead to the growth of a large-scale magnetic field even when the kinetic helicity is zero pointwise. Constraints on the operation of such a dynamo are expressed in terms of dynamo numbers that depend on the correlation length, correlation time and strength of these fluctuations. In the white-noise limit, we find that these fluctuations reduce the overall turbulent diffusion, while also contributing a drift term which does not affect the growth of the field. We also study the effects of non-zero correlation time and anisotropy. Turbulent diamagnetism, which arises due to inhomogeneities in the turbulent kinetic energy, leads to growing mean-field solutions even when the $\eta$-fluctuations are statistically isotropic.

Odd viscous liquids are endowed with an intrinsic mechanism that tends to restore a displaced particle back to its original position. Since the odd viscous stress does not dissipate energy, inertial oscillations and inertial-like waves can become prominent in such a liquid. In this paper, we show that an odd viscous liquid in three dimensions may give rise to such axially symmetric waves and also to plane-polarized waves. We assume tacitly that an anisotropy axis giving rise to odd viscous effects has already been established, and proceed to investigate the effects of odd viscosity on fluid flow behaviour. Numerical simulations of the full Navier–Stokes equations show the existence of inertial-like waves downstream of a body that moves slowly along the axis of an odd viscous liquid filled cylinder. The wavelength of the numerically determined oscillations agrees well with the developed theoretical framework. When odd viscosity is the dominant effect in steady motions, a modified Taylor–Proudman theorem leads to the existence of Taylor columns inside such a liquid. Formation of the Taylor column can be understood as a consequence of helicity segregation and energy transfer along the cylinder axis at group velocity, by the accompanying inertial-like waves, whenever the reflection symmetry of the system is lost. A number of Taylor column characteristics known from rigidly rotating liquids are recovered here for a non-rotating odd viscous liquid. These include counter-rotating swirling liquid flow above and below a body moving slowly along the anisotropy axis. Thus in steady motions, odd viscosity acts to suppress variations of liquid velocity in a direction parallel to the anisotropy axis, inhibiting vortex stretching and vortex twisting. In unsteady and nonlinear motions, odd viscosity enhances the vorticity along the same axis, thus affecting both vortex stretching and vortex twisting.

Turbulent flows over canopies of rigid filaments with different densities are studied using direct numerical simulations at moderate Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau \approx 550\unicode{x2013}1000$. The canopies have heights $h^+\approx 110\unicode{x2013}220$, and are used as an instance of obstructing substrate for the assessment of outer-layer similarity. We show that conventional methods used to determine the zero-plane displacement $\Delta y$ can be at odds with proper outer-layer similarity and may not be applicable for flows at moderate $Re_\tau$. Instead, we determine $\Delta y$ and the length and velocity scales that recover outer-layer similarity by minimising the difference between the smooth-wall and canopy diagnostic function everywhere above the roughness sublayer, not just in the logarithmic layer. In addition, we explore the possibility of the zero-plane displacement and the friction velocity being set independently, but find that outer-layer similarity is recovered more consistently when they are coupled. We observe that although the Kármán constant, $\kappa$ may not have smooth-wall-like values, the flow statistics are smooth-wall-like in the logarithmic layer and above if the surface effect is limited within the near-wall region. This suggests a modified outer-layer similarity, where $\kappa$ is not 0.39, but turbulence is otherwise smooth-wall-like. When the canopy is dense, the flow above the tips is essentially smooth-wall-like, with smooth-wall-like $\kappa \approx 0.39$ and origin essentially at the tip plane. For canopies with intermediate density, the overlying flow perceives a deeper zero-plane displacement into the canopy, which is consistent with observations reported by previous studies, but exhibits a lower Kármán constant, $\kappa \approx 0.34\unicode{x2013}0.36$. For sparse canopies, $\kappa$ tends back to its smooth-wall value, and the zero-plane displacement height is at the canopy bed. For all canopies studied, the decrease in $\kappa$ never exceeds $15\,\%$, which is significantly less than that obtained in some previous works using conventional methods to assess outer-layer similarity.

We demonstrate how to accelerate the computationally taxing process of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in numerical simulations for active control of bluff body flows at high Reynolds number ($Re$) using transfer learning. We consider the canonical flow past a circular cylinder whose wake is controlled by two small rotating cylinders. We first pre-train the DRL agent using data from inexpensive simulations at low $Re$, and subsequently we train the agent with small data from the simulation at high $Re$ (up to $Re=1.4\times 10^5$). We apply transfer learning (TL) to three different tasks, the results of which show that TL can greatly reduce the training episodes, while the control method selected by TL is more stable compared with training DRL from scratch. We analyse for the first time the wake flow at $Re=1.4\times 10^5$ in detail and discover that the hydrodynamic forces on the two rotating control cylinders are not symmetric.

The quasigeostrophic shallow-water system on the mid-latitude $\beta$ plane with weak, small-scale turbulent forcing is explored in the limit of large energy. Forcing is weak in the sense that the energy input rate relative to the energy of the flow is very small, of the order of $10^{-5}$–$10^{-10}$, and the potential vorticity assumes an approximate staircase structure. The flow has large energy in the sense that the jet spacing is equal to the domain width so that no further jet mergers can occur. Quasi-stationary numerical experiments, in which the energy grows linearly, reveal late-time quasi-steady, translating solutions comprising a single jet and vortex dipole, with details of the jet-vortex configuration depending on the deformation radius. At a smaller deformation radius the jet may traverse the entire domain in the $y$ direction one or more times, giving a jet orientation that is predominantly north–south, rather than the usual east–west orientation characteristic of $\beta$-plane jets at lower energy. In these meandering cases, a mode number is proposed that quantifies the degree of meandering relative to the vortices. Besides the steadily translating solutions, topological changes in the jet-vortex structure are identified that occur via a transient interaction of a meandering jet with a vortex. At high energy, these give rise to apparently periodic solutions of the system; at low energy, before a single, domain-wide jet is established, they indicate that jet merger may occur through more complicated processes than the simple merging of neighbouring jets.

The flow inside a rotating annulus tilted with respect to gravity is characterized experimentally and theoretically. As in the case of a tilted rotating cylinder the flow is forced by the free surface, maintained flat by gravity. It leads to resonances of global inertial modes (Kelvin modes) when the height of fluid is a multiple of half the wavelength of the mode. The divergence of the mode is saturated by viscous effects at the resonance. The maximum amplitude scales as the Ekman number to the power $-1/2$ when surface Ekman pumping is dominant, and to the power $-1$ when volumic damping is dominant. An analytical prediction is given with no fitting parameter, in excellent agreement with experimental results. At lower Ekman numbers, the flow destabilizes with respect to a triadic resonance instability, as already observed by Xu & Harlander (Phys. Rev. Fluids, 2020). We provide here a linear stability analysis leading to the viscous threshold of the instability for small tilt angles. For large tilt angles, a centrifugal instability is observed due to the acceleration of the flow by the inner cylinder. Finally, the features of the turbulent flow and its mixing efficiency are characterized experimentally. We underline the potential interest of this configuration for bioreactors.
