Abstract

The pressure fluctuations caused by a turbulent boundary layer on a solid surface have been obtained over the Mach number range 1·33-5·00. The root-mean-square values of the pressures are found to be proportional to the local skin friction. The proportionality constant is not a strong function of Mach number in the range investigated but is larger than the previously obtained subsonic values by about a factor of 2. The space-time correlations with the space separation in the direction of the mean flow are characterized by a convection speed Uc, and this speed falls from 0·8 of the free-steam velocity at M = 1·33 to 0·6 at M = 5. The peak value of the correlation coefficient falls to one-half for a spatial separation of the measuring points of about two-tenths of the boundary layer thickness.
