1 This review was about to go to press when Michael Wallace-Hadrill died, on 3 November 1985. His death will sadden all those ecclesiastical historians who profited from his published work and from his generous fund of understanding advice. We could have hoped for more of both during a long and happy retirement. It was not to be. His last book thus becomes something more precious than any imposing monument. He has left his readers inspiration, and also provocation. The work will go forward: it is the way he would have wanted it.
