As Julia Crick has noted in a detailed study of the dissemination and reception of the Historia in the later middle ages, “Geoffrey's History touched on many themes and the appeal of his work doubtless has complex explanations. The British Cadwaladr's subjects were engaged in civil war, suffered famine, and were forced into exile overseas, after which the nearly deserted island was reoccupied by the Saxons.
