Future meetings
5–7 January 1999. Winter meeting hosted by the Centre for Human Biology, University of Leeds. This will be a joint meeting with the British Biophysical Society and include a symposium on the structure and mechanism of molecular motors, to include actomyosin in muscle and elsewhere, kinesin and other proteins with mechanical properties.
13–15 July 1999. Summer meeting hosted by the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, University of Glasgow.
The International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS)
ISSLS International Fellowship Fund. Appropriate individuals from developing countries are eligible for this Fellowship to enable them to attend the 1999 meeting in Hawaii (21–25 June). The applicants should have a demonstrated interest in clinical or nonclinical spinal research and should send a letter outlining their work together with 2 letters of sponsorship from their superiors and the abstract of a paper or poster to Dr Hanley at the above address by 1 January 1999.
Surgical Dynamics Travelling Fellowship Fund. The ISSL has received an educational grant from Surgical Dynamics for a Travelling Fellowship for US $5000. The competition for the Travelling Fellowship is open to investigators who are, in the year of application, aged 35 years or younger. The applicant should have an expressed and documented research interest in lumbar spine problems. The Travelling Fellowship can be used as a stipend for research work at another institution than the person's own. The applicant should include: a description of the research project to be performed; a letter of acceptance from the host institution where the research work will be performed; a letter of recommendation from a member of ISSLS (if the applicant is not a member); a letter of recommendation from the department chairman or head of a laboratory, etc. ; a curriculum vitae of the applicant including a list of publications and presentations. Four copies of each should be submitted. The deadline for applications is 1 March 1999. The committee will announce its selection at the annual meeting of the Society in Hawaii, 21–25 June 1999. The recipient of the 1999 Fellowship Award should be prepared to submit a report to the Society at the 2000 annual meeting.
