Shading treatments of 50% of the incident radiation were applied to the semidwarf wheat cultivar Leones INTA before and after anthesis in two field experiments in Argentina in 1987 and 1988. The treatments reduced biological (above-ground dry matter) yield, grain yield and number of grains/m2. Number of grains/m2 was closely and linearly correlated with ear dry weight at anthesis and with the photothermal quotient, calculated from 20 days before to 10 days after anthesis. Grain yield was sink limited, and the shading treatments reduced sink strength. The contribution of preanthesis assimilates to grain yield was smaller in the shaded crops than in the unshaded controls; in unshaded crops, almost 40% of grain yield was contributed by preanthesis assimilates whilst in preanthesis shaded crops this contribution was negligible. The proportion of preanthesis assimilates contributed to the grain was closely related to the decrease in stem dry weight during grain filling. The effects of shading on main stems and tillers were the same.

The effects of deep tillage and no-tillage on soil physical properties and wheat yield following rice were compared with conventional tillage at three irrigation rates (irrigation water:open pan evaporation ratios of 0·6, 0·9 and 1·2) in 1982–85 at the experimental station of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Deep tillage decreased soil bulk density and penetrometer resistance, and increased depth of rooting, profile water use and wheat yield. No-tillage adversely affected all these variables. The tillage effects varied with amount and distribution of rain during the cropping season.

A screenhouse study in Haryana in 1986/87 evaluated the effect of boron on the wheat cultivar WH147 grown in pots in a sandy soil at three salinities. Before sowing, 0–9 mg B/kg soil was added. Without added B the crop produced significantly more grain at electrical conductivity of the saturation extract (ECe) 6 dS/m than at other salinities, but at ECe 8 dS/m yields were similar to those in nonsaline (ECe 0·8) soil. Grain yield in nonsaline soil was not affected significantly even at the highest concentration of added B, even though at the boot stage the shoots had accumulated as much as 307 mg B/kg. At ECe 6 and 8 dS/m, grain yield was significantly less with 3 and 1 mg added B/kg, respectively, than without added B, even though the B concentration in the shoots was only 72 and 31 mg/kg, respectively. The results indicated that B tolerance decreased with increasing salinity of the soil, even though B absorption by plants was 24–62% less in saline than in nonsaline soil at similar B concentrations. As B and salinity often occur together, threshold values of B in soil and plants for optimum growth of wheat will differ with the ECe of the soil. The results suggested that Ca:B ratio in wheat straw is not a reliable indicator of B toxicity in the soil.

Results are reported from nine field trials carried out in 1985/86 and 1986/87 aimed at identifying plant traits which are associated with high yield in barley in low-rainfall Mediterranean areas. Thirtyseven two-rowed and 35 six-rowed genotypes, representing the known diversity in traits considered to be useful, were compared in trials at three sites differing in expected annual rainfall (212–328 mm) in northern Syria, and in droughted and irrigated trials at Cambridge, UK. Yield, its components and other morphological and developmental traits were measured and correlations calculated.

Grain yields of the two- and six-rowed groups of genotypes were similar at all sites except in the irrigated trial in Cambridge, where the six-rowed genotypes gave the highest yield. Aside from the known difference in number of ears and number of grains/ear between two- and six-rowed genotypes, the simple correlations between grain yield and measured traits suggested that important traits for high yield in two- and six-rowed genotypes in dry environments were prostrate habit, vigorous seedling growth, good ground cover, early ear emergence, many ears/m2 and large grains. In the two-rowed genotypes, short stature and a short grain-filling period were also important, while in the six-rowed genotypes, tall stature, high straw yield, many grains/ear and long peduncles were important. Correlations of these characters with an index of drought susceptibility and with yield adjusted for yield potential and date of ear emergence supported the conclusions based on the simple correlations.

The physiological basis of the correlated traits is discussed and the implications for breeding are considered.

Three rates of phosphate (0, 25, and 60 kg/ha P2O5) were applied to phosphorus-deficient native grassland at Tel Hadya, in northern Syria, and biomass productivity, botanical composition and number of legume seeds in the soil were monitored for five seasons (1984/85–1988/89). The experiment was grazed at low (0·8 sheep/ha per year) and high (1·7 sheep/ha per year) stocking rates from the second to the fourth seasons of the experiment; in the fifth season, the low and high stocking rates were increased to 1·1 and 2·3 sheep/ha per year, respectively. The experimental site was typical of native grassland within the cereal zone of west Asia, where cropping is not possible because of shallow, stony soils and steep slopes.

The results showed that annual applications of phosphorus, even as low as 25 kg P2O5/ha, alleviated the deficiency in soil P and resulted in improved pasture production, even in dry years. Legume production showed the greatest response to P, increasing by 0·3–3 times the production of the control treatments. By the fifth season, legume seed mass had increased threefold and number of seeds sixfold in the P-treated plots, compared with the first season, while in the control plots there was little change. Rain-use efficiency on the P-treated plots was more than double that of the controls by the fourth and fifth seasons.

Practical application of the results depends on whether (i) legumes are as frequent in native grasslands, as a whole, as they are at Tel Hadya, (ii) the P deficiency observed at Tel Hadya is widespread, and (iii) grazing of communally owned grasslands can be controlled. It is suggested that all three criteria will often be fulfilled and, therefore, that grassland productivity in west Asia could be substantially increased. Furthermore, the results suggest that above-ground cover and soil organic matter will also increase after P application, both of which will help to reduce soil erosion and thereby increase the sustainability of livestock production in west Asia.

Components of the N cycle were studied at Hurley, UK, in 1985–87. In grass-clover (Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens) swards, grazed at three intensities, low total inputs of N were associated with low outputs and losses of N. Nevertheless, the flows (intake and excretion) of N through animals were substantial and gave rise, at the higher intensities of grazing, to an acceptably high agricultural output per hectare. This was considered evidence of a fast and efficient recycling of N between plants, animals and soil. The release of N to the environment (as nitrogenous gases and nitrate) was substantially less from the grass–clover swards than from a grass sward fertilized with 420 kg N/ha, and this was at the expense of only 20% loss in production. The mechanisms which might account for the high efficiency of utilization and recycling of N in grass–clover swards are discussed in the context of the balance of the supply of C and N to plant and soil biomasses under grazing. The results confirm that optimizing agricultural output in grass–clover swards has little adverse effect on the environment, but the importance to this end of sustaining a large proportion of N-deficient grass in grass-clover swards is emphasized.

The ability to detect and measure water stress accurately is critical for optimizing crop production. The Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), the linear relationship of the difference between foliage and air temperatures as a function of the air vapour pressure deficit, is one widely used method. Under well-watered conditions, a ‘baseline’ is derived that is crop specific and presumed fairly constant, despite differences in development and physiology. This study reports changes in the baseline of the CWSI for lucerne crops not subjected to water shortage over 3 years. Studies of lucerne in California from April 1986 to October 1988 used the CWSI to plan irrigations. It was necessary to re-establish the baseline periodically throughout the experiment. In the first year it was similar to that reported in the literature, but in the second year it had a statistically significant steeper slope and higher intercept. In the third year, the regression equation was similar to that in the first year. The changes in the baseline are thought to be a result of crop age rather than year-to-year weather fluctuations. The baseline needs to be determined periodically as the crop matures, to ensure accurate interpretation of plant water stress.

The susceptibility to drought stress during flowering and grain filling of dwarf hybrids of pearl millet carrying the dwarfing gene d2 was investigated in 1987 at Patancheru, India, under field conditions during the dry season and, in the rainy season, under a rain shelter, using four pairs of near-isogenic tall and dwarf hybrids. Drought stress during grain filling reduced the number of grains per unit area and individual grain mass. Grain yields of the dwarf hybrids were lower than those of the corresponding tall hybrids in the unstressed control and under drought stress and were associated with a lower individual grain mass in the dwarf lines. In the dwarf hybrids, harvest index was similar to or better than that of the tall versions but a reduced biomass resulted in lower grain yields. Dwarf hybrids were not more adversely affected by water stress, however, than their tall counterparts, indicating that susceptibility to drought stress would not be likely to limit acceptance of new dwarf varieties.

Two sets of experiments were conducted on oxic Plinthustalf and udic Ustochrept soils in 1983–85 at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. One set tested six daylength-insensitive (DI) cultivars and the other set compared four or five daylength-sensitive (DS) cultivars with one or two DI cultivars as controls, sown on three or four dates. Sowing date, cultivar and their interaction significantly affected seed yield in 1983 and 1985. In 1984, yield was not affected by sowing date in the DI cultivars nor by the sowing date x cultivar interaction in the DS cultivars. Optimum sowing dates were mid- and late July. Sowing earlier gave no yield advantage, whereas sowing later reduced yield severely.

The medium-maturing DI cultivar TN88–63 and the DS cultivar Koakin Local, which has a critical photoperiod in late August, exhibited average to below average yield stability but had a high mean yield and were considered well adapted in all conditions. The other cultivars were either moderately or poorly adapted to the Sudan savannah zone. The sowing date experiments were effective in identifying adapted cowpea cultivars, even from a single year's data, and can be used for screening cowpea for adaptation in the Sudan savannah zone.

Two sets of experiments on cowpea sowing date were conducted in 1983–85 at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. One set tested six daylength-insensitive (DI) cultivars and the other compared four or five daylength-sensitive (DS) cultivars with one or two DI cultivars as controls. Sowing after inadequate rainfall, particularly when followed by drought stress, impeded seedling establishment and growth. Severe drought stress during the reproductive growth stages and prolonged drought stress throughout the crop season adversely affected flowering, flowering intensity and subsequent yield. Cultivar differences in ability to withstand drought damage were observed. The ability of cultivars to (i) branch profusely, to compensate for stands lost by drought during seedling growth and (ii) flower at such a time that pod set and fill coincide with favourable climatic conditions appears to be a prerequisite for satisfactory adaptation to the Sudan savannah zone of semi-arid West Africa. Daylength-sensitivity and early maturity per se were inadequate to prevent yield losses under drought conditions.

Catchment basins were prepared within bunded fields from 1986 to 1988, with ratios of catchment area to cropped area of 1:1 or 2:1. Annual rainfall varied from 102 to 282 mm.

Run-off from the catchment basins increased water storage in the cropped areas by 55 and 43% of the rain falling on the catchments in the 1:1 and 2:1 treatments, respectively. Yields increased considerably on a cropped area basis by water harvesting, but not always sufficiently to compensate for the loss of cropped land. Averaged over all trials, yields from the 1:1 treatment were 95% of the control yields. Yields-in the 2:1 treatments were reduced by waterlogging damage.

The cost of catchment set-up was low compared with the reduced seed and ploughing costs in the water-harvesting treatments, resulting in 18 and 31% reductions in overall costs for the 1:1 and 2:1 treatments, respectively. Net benefits for the 1:1 treatment equalled or exceeded those of the control, but were 32% lower for the 2:1 treatment. Within-field water harvesting with a 1:1 crop: catchment ratio thus reduced risk by reducing investments in seed and animal draught power, whilst maintaining yields and net benefits, suggesting that it could be of considerable benefit to farmers in an environment with a high risk of crop failure. Catchment preparation on unused land adjacent to cropped land, and further research aimed at reducing waterlogging damage, could both lead to improvements in farmers' circumstances in upland Balochistan.

An experiment using 30 Belgian landrace finishing pigs was carried out, in 1989, at the University of Leuven, Belgium, to examine the effect of clenbuterol in the diet (1 mg/kg) on the repartitioning of nutrients and body composition. Clenbuterol was administered for 20 days preceding the week before slaughter. Fifteen animals were fed a diet containing the β-agonist, and 15 other animals served as negative controls. Weight gain, feed conversion and N utilization improved during β-agonist treatment. Removal of clenbuterol from the diet rapidly increased blood urea concentrations, indicating immediate, less efficient, N utilization. In the week before slaughter, the animals did not lose the extra weight gained in the period of clenbuterol feeding. Backfat thickness at slaughter was reduced by 15% in the animals fed clenbuterol. Dressing percentage and post mortem pH decline, colour and water-holding capacity in ham and the longissimus dorsi were not affected by dietary treatment. Clenbuterol was not detected in renal fat and the longissimus dorsi at slaughter.

Diets with added fat at 25, 50 and 100 g/kg were formulated with four blends of beef tallow: soya oil, namely 100:0, 75:25, 50:50 and 0:100. An additional diet had no added fat (control diet) to give an experimental design of (3 × 4) + 1. A total of 96 individually penned pigs was used (mean initial and final live weights of 22·4 and 87·5 kg, respectively). The experiment was carried out during the period July 1985 to February 1986 at the Agricultural Research Institute, Hillsborough. Equal numbers of boar and gilt blocks were used and the pigs were fed individually to a scale to give equal amounts of digestible energy: live weight0·75 Neither concentration of fat nor blend of fat had any significant effect on the rates of live weight or carcass weight gain. Increasing concentration of fat significantly improved the carcass feed conversion ratio (P < 0·001), but the blend of fat had no significant effect. Neither killing-out yield nor the intake of digestible energy per unit of carcass gain was significantly affected by the concentration of added dietary fat nor the blend of fat. Fat treatments did not significantly affect the lean plus bone content of the ham joint, drip loss from or the depth of colour of the longissimus dorsi or the weight of flare fat. No evidence was found of synergistic effects between the fat and nonfat components of the diet nor between fats within the blends of fat on growth, digestible energy consumed per unit of carcass gain and carcass attributes. Boars had a more efficient conversion of feed to carcass gain than gilts (P < 0·01).

A total of 52 individually penned pigs (mean initial and final live weights (LW) of 31·7 and 81·5 kg, respectively) was used in a randomized block experiment at the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland, Hillsborough, in 1984. The treatments were based on dietary regimes which comprised a control diet in which meal was offered at 86 g dry matter/k W0·75 per day or diets in which silage effluent was substituted for part of the allowance of meal of the control diet at 125, 175, 225 and 275 g/kg on a dry matter basis to give 0·125, 0·175, 0·225 and 0·275 effluent diets. There was also a negative control diet in which meal was offered at 850 g/kg of the rate of feeding of the control diet. Each of these dietary treatments included water available ad libitum. In a further treatment, effluent was substituted for 225 g/kg of the meal allowance of the control treatment on a dry matter basis, but additional water was not offered. The treatment based on the 0·275 effluent diet was omitted from the first four replicates.

Some refusals of diet occurred at the higher rates of effluent feeding, with mean refusals of 7, 11 and 21 g/kg, respectively, for the 0·175, 0·225 and 0·275 effluent diets on a dry matter basis. Significant linear and quadratic contrasts (P <0·01) were found for daily LW gain, feed conversion ratio and total liquid intake. The quadratic response curves for daily LW gain and feed conversion ratio had relatively flat peaks, optimum values occurring at concentrations of effluent in the diet of 95 (S.E. 17) and 99 (S.E. 15) g/kg, respectively. From the response curves, performance in terms of LW gain and feed conversion ratio was equal, or superior, to that obtained with the control diet at concentrations of effluent of up to 190 (S.E. 33) and 199 (S.E. 30) g/kg, respectively, but deteriorated at higher concentrations of effluent.

Additional water was consumed at all rates of inclusion of effluent. However, from the quadratic equations, the total consumption of liquid was lower with diets containing effluent at up to 161 g/kg of diet than with the control diet.

Two experiments were carried out in Scotland 1984 to study the efficiency of energy utilization by Suffolk × Blackface lambs. In the first experiment, a digestibility trial, the lambs were fed three diets: roughage (R) consisting of chopped dried grass; concentrate (C) containing 700 g whole barley, 225 g ground barley and 75 g fishmeal/kg dry matter (DM); and a mixed diet (M) containing 500 g of roughage and 500 g of concentrate/kg DM. The DM and organic matter digestibility coefficients of diet M were lower than the ‘expected’ values calculated by summation of the separately determined digestibility coefficients of the component feeds. Similarly, the metabolizable energy (ME) value was 4·0% lower than expected.

In the second experiment, 40 lambs of c. 20 kg live weight (LW) were offered 50 kg roughage DM (ME 9·74 MJ/kg DM) and 50 kg concentrate DM (ME 12·21 MJ/kg DM) either as a mixture (treatment M) or sequentially (treatment S). Lambs on treatment S took 33 days longer to consume their allocation of food than those on treatment M, but achieved a similar final empty body weight and empty body composition. This contrasts with results predicted by a feeding standards model for lambs of a similar LW offered diets of the same ME content. The longer feeding period, and hence greater overall maintenance requirement, of lambs on treatment S was partly offset by associated effects causing a reduction in the total ME available to lambs on treatment M, and partly to improved efficiency of energy utilization for gain and/or a lower daily maintenance requirement of lambs on treatment S. Allowing for associated effects and the adoption of a variable maintenance requirement in current feeding standards would result in a more accurate prediction of animal performance.

One hundred and fifty-four, March-born, lowland ewe lambs, on the Lyons Estate farm, were allocated to a 2×2 factorial experiment. In September 1987, half were shorn and 1 month later the lambs were treated with intravaginal sponges, containing either 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate or 40 mg fluorogestone acetate, for 12 days. Following sponge removal, ewes were mated to fertile rams at a ram: ewe ratio of 1:6. There was no significant difference in reproductive performance between the two progestagen treatments (P > 0·05). Premating shearing increased (P < 0·01) conception rate and reduced the percentage of barren ewes (P < 0·01) but there was no effect on litter size. Time of gestation following shearing was increased (P < 0·01) by 1·24 days. Lamb growth rate up to weaning was not affected by the shearing treatment. The results of this trial indicate positive advantages of premating shearing of ewe lambs.

Oestrous activity in local Rahmani and Ossimi sheep and imported subtropical Awassi sheep at different times of the year in Upper Egypt and the effect of continuous exposure to long-day conditions from July till December on this activity was studied in 1986. The three breeds differed substantially in oestrous activity but differences did not seem to be directly related to latitude of origin. Rahmani ewes from the Nile Delta were mostly cyclic all year round; the percentage coming to oestrus each month never fell below 70%. Ossimi ewes originating from mid-Egypt had a very long breeding season; 74% had an anoestrous period of 68·8 days (v. 27% for Rahmani ewes). All Awassi ewes, except one, had an anoestrous period of 96·5 days on average.

Awassi ewes also showed more response to continuous exposure to long days (14 h) than Ossimi ewes, seen in a shorter reaction interval and a greater decrease in the percentage of ewes coming into oestrus (27 and 90% in control and treated Awassi ewes, respectively). The results indicated that changes in daylength, although small in subtropical regions, may be a major factor controlling seasonal changes in reproductive activity in subtropical sheep breeds, the more seasonal breed being more responsive to changes in daylength. The possibility of selection within these breeds for continuous reproductive activity is also indicated.

Simulation modelling was used to investigate interactions between forage degradation characteristics, rumen processes and body weight, and to predict the voluntary food intake and digestion of a range of forages. Predicted voluntary intake and digestion agreed well with empirical data, explaining 61 and 70%, respectively, of variance in observed values. Since the data covered a wide range of animal weights and forage qualities, these results suggest that the model is a useful means of integrating the effects of animal and forage variables. Interactions were examined between animal weight and diet quality, as defined by the proportion of potentially digestible cell contents and cell walls and their rates of digestion. Retention time of food in the digestive tract was shown by regression to scale with W0·27. The time taken to comminute large fibre particles also scaled with W0·27. Longer retention of digesta by large ruminants increases digestive efficiency compared with small animals and would permit them to survive on lower-quality foods. The model showed that maximum intake of metabolizable energy scales with c. W0·87, greater than the scaling of maintenance with W0·73.

A rumen simulation device (Rusitec) was used to compare the effects of autoclaved and γ-irradiated Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract (AO) with those of untreated AO on rumen fermentation. Each vessel received daily 18 g of a basal diet consisting of 500 g hay, 299·5 g rolled barley, 100 g molasses, 91 g fishmeal and 9·5 g of a minerals and vitamins mixture/kg dry matter. AO preparations (0·25 g/day) were added with the feed. Dry matter digestion increased at 24 h, but not at 48 h, after adding AO, suggesting that AO stimulated the rate of digestion but not the extent. AO increased the numbers of total and cellulolytic bacteria by 90 and 50%, respectively. Irradiated AO stimulated numbers of bacteria in the same way as AO, although to a slightly lesser extent. Autoclaved AO had no effect. Thus, the mode of action of AO on rumen fermentation depends on a heat-labile component, possibly a nutrient or an enzyme, or metabolic activity. Viable AO cells are not required to stimulate bacterial growth and activity.

Bentonite (2 g/day) was added to four vessels in the rumen simulation technique (Rusitec) and the effects on the fermentation were compared with four control vessels over a 21-day period. Vessels in both groups were supplied with 20 g/day of a diet containing, per kg, 500 g hay, 299·5 g barley, 100 g molasses, 91 g fishmeal and 9·5 g of mineral/vitamin mix. Numbers of ciliate protozoa were reduced by 69% (40 v. 12·8 ×103/ml) in vessels receiving bentonite. The viable count of bacteria was increased by one-third in these vessels (4·8 v. 3·6 × 108/ml), and ammonia production was 54·7 and 76·7 mg/day in the bentonite and control vessels, respectively. Other effects on fermentation products and metabolic activities were minor, except that the rate of breakdown of [14C]leucine-labelled Selenomonas ruminantium protein was 47% lower in fluid taken from vessels receiving bentonite. Bentonite did not affect the rate of bacterial breakdown by protozoa immediately when it was added to rumen fluid in vitro, although a decline in activity was becoming apparent after 4 h incubation. Microscopic examination of rumen fluid to which bentonite was added indicated that some bentonite was ingested by protozoa, but that its main toxic effect was at the cell surface, causing interference with the motion of cilia and thereby preventing motility of protozoa, particularly the holotrichs.
