The following paper records experiments made to determine the magnitude of the error involved in the sampling of a soil for survey purposes. While it is not held that the results obtained are true for all localities, they serve to indicate the order of magnitude of the various errors.

page 145 note 2 Since sending in this paper, the authors have seen a paper by Pfeiffer and Blanok, Landw. Versuchs. Stat. LXXVIII. Working on the nitrogen content of an experimental field, they obtained a field error of 2·5 per cent. This was, however, over a small area and the result is scarcely of service for survey purposes.
