Much has been learned since the International Psychogeriatric Association's initial consensus conference on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in 1996. In this introduction to the 1999 conference proceedings, I review what we have learned, identify some remaining gaps in the knowledge base, and describe new areas for research and program development.
