[Reproduced from the official text provided by the United Nations. The Convention was agreed upon and adopted by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Framework Convention on Climate Change, during its Fifth Session, second part, held at New York from April 30 to May 9, 1992. In accordance with Article 20, the Convention was opened for signature by States Members of the U.N. or any of its specialized agencies, or Parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice and by regional economic integration organizations at the UNCED Conference. It remains open for signature at U.N. Headquarters in New York until June 19, 1993. As of June 29, 1992, 155 states and the European Economic Community had signed the Convention.

[The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted a resolution on interim arrangements on May 9, 1992. The resolution requests the U.N. Secretary-General to make arrangements for a session of the Committee and the first session of the Conference of the Parties, and appeals to governments and organizations to make voluntary contributions.

[The Introductory Note for UNCED at 311.L.M. 814 (1992) discusses the Convention. Three other UNCED documents appearing in I.L.M. are the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development at 31 I.L.M. 874 (1992); the Convention on Biological Diversity at 31 I.L.M 818 (1992); and the Statement of Principles for a Global Consensus of the Management, Conservation and Sustainable Development of All Types of Forests at 31 I.L.M. 881 (1992).]
