Functional adaptation of silk glands after administration of antibiotic to larvae of Philosamia ricini (Boisd)

Abstract

The effects of applying varying doses of an antibiotic to fifth instar larvae of Philosamia ricini on the silk glands were studied. Transaminases were increased by low doses, while RNA accumulation was reduced after administration of tetracycline. The levels of DNA showed little response to treating with antibiotic. However, the incorporation of amino acids into silk proteins was generally increased. The overall effects on the silk gland was reflected by its weight, cocoon weight, quantity of raw silk and quality of silk. All these indices were improved by administration of tetracycline.

Résumé

Les effets d'appliquer un antibiotic, aux larves du 5em stage, sur les glandes a soie furent etudies. Les transaminases augmenterent apris les petites doses, tandis que l'accumulation du RNA diminua apris l'administration du tetracycline. Les niveaux du DNA montrerent de faibles reactions au traitement arec l'antibiotique. L'incorporation des acides amines au proteine de la soie augmenta L'efficacite generale des glandes a soie fut refletee sur leur poids, le poids des cocons, la quantite et la qualite de la soie. Toutes ces indices augmenterent par l'administration du tetracycline.
