Toxicity of green marine algae to the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch

Abstract

Green marine algae (Codium sp.) was extracted sequentially with different organic solvents on cold. Lima bean leaf discs treated with the different extracts were offered to adult female T. urticae for 96 hr and the corrected percentage mortality of the females was calculated. The toxicity of the different extracts to the eggs was also recorded. Petroleum ether extract of this seaweed was highly toxic to females at 4 g/ml. At 1 g/ml ca. 48% of the individuals were killed. Chloroform and ethyl alcohol extracts were found to be poorly effective against the females even at high concentrations (4 g/ml) where less than 50% of the individuals died after 96 hr. Toxicity of crude extracts to the egg stage was less pronounced and chloroform extract was found to be more efficient than the other extracts tested.

Résumé

Des algues marines vertes, Codium sp. qu'ont été extraites sequentiellement en utilisant différents solvents organiques, sur des fruills de haricots verts traités avec différent extraits ont été offertes à des T. urticae femelles adultes pendant 96 heures et le pourcentage de mortalité corrigé a été calculé la toxicité des différents extraits pour les oeufs a été aussi calculée. L'extrait d'éther de pétrole de cette algue ont été très toxiques pour les femelles adultes a des concentrations 4 g/ml. Pour des concentrations plus petites (1 g/ml) on a noté moins de 50% de mortalité (48%). Les extraits de chloroform et d'alcohol ethylique n'ont pas été efficaces contre les femelles même à haute concentration (4 g/ml) puisque un mortalité de moins que 50% a été enregistrée après 96 heures. La toxicité des extraits crus pour les oeufs était moins prononcée et l'extrait de chloroforme a été trouvé plus efficace que les autres extraits essayés.
