Resistance to insecticides in the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner from cotton-growing regions of Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract

Insecticides belonging to the four major groups were bioassayed against Helicoverpa armigera Hubner collected from cotton in the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh, India, during the 1989/90, 1990/91 and 1991/92 cropping seasons. High levels of resistance to all groups of insecticides were recorded. Tolerance to quinalphos had increased drastically in the 1991/92 season, while resistance to endosulfan, monocrotophos and carbaryl had increased moderately. The populations were also highly resistant to cypermethrin and deltamethrin and mildly resistant to fenvalerate. The resistance levels varied from season to season, thus reflecting the selection pressure created through insecticides.

Résumé

Quatre grands groupes connus d'insecticides ont été testés sur Helicoverpa armigera Hubner collectés dans la région à fort usage d'insecticides de Guntur de l'Andhra Pradesh sur les cultures de coton au cours des saisons de cultures 1989/90, 1990/91 et 1991/92. Des hautes niveaux de résistance ont été enregistrés au niveau de tous les groupes d'insecticides. La tolérance aux quinalphos s'était accrue grandement au cours de la saison 1991/92 tandis que la résistance à l'endosulfan, au monocrotophos et au carbaryl s'était accrue modérement. Les populations avaient manifesté une forte résistance au cyperméthrine et au deltaméthrine et une résistance modérée au fenvalerate. On a trouvé que le niveau de résistance variait de saison en saison, reflétant ainsi la pression de selection qu'exerçaient les insecticides.
