Natural Enemies in the Control of Pests of Cassava, Manihot Esculenta Crantz

Abstract

The various pests of the cassava plant, Manihot esculenta Crantz, were reviewed with particular reference to the two exotic pests viz: cassava mealybug,Phenacoccus manihoti, Mat-Ferr, and cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa Bondar which were accidentally introduced into Africa without their natural enemies in the early seventies.

Classical biological control programme for these two pests initiated and championed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria was also reviewed and both successes and limitations of the programme highlighted. Suggestions on how to improve the efficiency of the programme are made.

Résumé

Les pestes diverses de la plante du manioc, Manihot esculenta Crantz, sont examinées avec une référence particulière aux deux pestes exotiques, à savoir Phenacoccus manihoti Matt - Ferr et Mononychellus tanajoa Bondar qui ont été accidentalement introduits, en Afrique sans leurs ennemis naturels dans des années débutantes soixante-dix.

Le programme de contrôle biologique classique pour ces deux pestes, initié et championné par l'Institut Internationale de l'Agriculture Tropicale (IITA) Ibadan, Nigeria est aussi revisé est les succès ainsi que les limitations du programme sont mis en évidence. Des suggestions sur l'amélioration de l'efficacité du programme sont avancées.
