Influence of host plants on the parasitism of Diaphania indica (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) by Apanteles taragamae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Abstract

Apanteles taragamae is a major parasite of Diaphania indica, a serious peston cultivated cucurbits. Variations in the parasitism of D. indica infesting different cucurbits in thefield were observed. Four cucurbits viz: ivy gourd, cucumber, bitter gourd and musk melon were screened to identify the host plant(s) favourable to A. taragamae. Maximum parasitism was recorded on bitter gourd andivy gourd. These two cucurbits were favoured over musk melon and cucumber when leaf hairness was examined. Both ivy gourd and bitter gourd had smoother leaves than cucumber or musk melon and parasitism of larvae on smooth leaf plants was greater. However, on the basis of parasite development on the four cucurbit reared host larvae, it was concluded that D. indica's preference for bitter gourd and ivy gourd was due to the influence of the host habitat (leaf hairness) and not due to physiological factors.

Résumé

Apanteles taragamae est un parasite majeur de Diaphania indica, qui est un insecte sérieux de plusieurs cucurbitacées cultivées. Dans les champs, on a observé qu'il y avait certaines variations dans le parasitisme de D. indica qui infestait divers cucurbitacées. Quatre variétés de cucurbitacées, à savoir, ivy gourd, concombre, bitter gourd et musk melon étaient examinées dans la presénte étude pour identifier la plante(s) hôte(s) qui est favorable à A. taragamae. Les resultats ont indiquée que la parasitisme était noté sur le bitter gourd et ivy gourd. Basé aussi sur d'autres paramètres, on a trouvé que ces deux cucurbitacées ont été favorisé pas rapport musk melon et concombre. Pourtant, sur le base du dévéloppement du parasite à partir de larves éiaborées sur les quatres cucurbitacées, on a conclu que la préferénce de D. indica pour bitter gourd et ivy gourd était dû a l'influence de l'habitat de la plante hôte plutôt qu'à des facteurs physiologiques.
