Effects of KK-42, an imidazole derivative, on rearing and reproductive performance of Bombyx mori L. during the hot, wet season

Abstract

Experiments on the effects of KK-42, an anti-juvenile hormone imidazole derivative, on the rearing and reproduction of Bombyx mori L. were carried out in a hot, wet summer in West Bengal, India. A single dose of 3 μg KK-42/larva induced precocious metamorphosis in a bivoltine hybrid (KPGB × P5) race of B. mori when applied topically to freshly moulted (less than 1-h old) fourth instars, and increased their rearing performance over control tetramoulters. However, cocoon and shell weights, shell ratio and filament length were reduced by the anti-JH treatment. Final body weight and head capsule width of the treated fourth instars were significantly higher than those of the controls. Bivoltine trimoulter males also showed good capacity for mating with multivoltine Nistari females. The possibility of obtaining three-way multi-bi hybrid eggs during the wet part of summer in a tropical climate is discussed.

Résumé

Les effets de KK-42, une hormone anti-juvénile dérivée de l'imidazole ont été étudiés sur l'élevage et la reproduction du papillon à soie, Bombyx mori L. Les expériences ont été conduites, in situ, dans l'Etat du Bengale en Inde, au cours d'un été chaud et pluvieux. Une dose unique de 3 μg de KK-42 par larve induisait une métamorphose précoce chez la race bivoltine hybride (KPGB × P5) de B. mori, une fois que le produit était appliqué par contact sur le corps des larves de 4ème stade nouvellement émergées (à moins d'une heure après la mue). La même dose augmentait la performance d'élevage des larves en comparaison des témoins du même âge. Cependant le poids du cocon et de la coquille, de même que la relation coquille/longueur du fil de soie étaient réduits sous l'effet de l'hormone anti-juvénile. Enfin, le poids corporel et la largeur de la capsule crânienne des larves de 4ème stade traitées, étaient plus élevés par rapport aux témoins. Les mâles issus des hybrides bivoltines ont montré leur aptitude à s'accoupler avec les femelles multivoltines de race Nistari. Les possibilités d'obtention des oeufs multi- et bi-hybrides pendant la période pluvieuse d'été dans un climat tropical y sont discutées.
