Effects of Crop Damage Caused by the Sugar-cane Borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), and the Ratoon Stunting Disease Bacterium on Sugar-cane Yield in Louisiana*

Abstract

The sugar-cane borer (SCB), Diatraea saccharalis (F.), and the ratoon stunting disease (RSD) bacterium independently caused significant reductions in stalk weight, cane tonnage and sugar yield. A three-fold difference was found in the comparison of per cent loss of cane tonnage due to RSD alone with that due to the disease in combination with SCB damage in first ratoon sugar-cane. Variance analysis failed to detect interaction between damage by SCB and that by RSD. The data analysed were obtained from an experiment of six replication which evaluated the effects of SCB damage and RSD on sugar-cane yield in Louisiana. We used the randomized complete-block experimental design with split-plot arrangement of treatments. Three schedules of insecticide application to the growing cane, against SCB were the main plots whilst the subplots comprised of RSD inoculation vs. no inoculation of sugar-cane plants grown from seed canes with light vs. severe SCB damage.

Résumé

La canne à sucre foreur (SCB), Diatraea saccharalis (F.), et la maladie d'état rabougri de ratoon (RSD) bacteria causent séparement des diminutions en poids de l'approche, le tonnage de la canne, et la production du sucre dans une six réproduction, fait au hasard complete, en utilisant le niveau de dégâts de SCB sur la canne croissante comme les terrains entiers et la combinaision de deux types de graines de canne, plus deux autres niveaux de RSD comme sous-terrains. Une différence était découverte on trois catégories dans la comparaison pour cent perte de tonnage, de canne occasioné par le RSD seulement, par contraste avec cela occasioné a la maladie en commbinaision avec SCB dégâts dans la prémière ratoon canne à sucre. Une analyse donnée par une procédé incompatible ou par des méthodes de regressions, échouent de découvir la réciproque ou une corrélation entre le dégât par le SCB et celui par le RSD.
