Economic analysis of a promising cultural practice in the control of moth pests of cabbage

Abstract

Various planting patterns of cabbage and tomato were investigated to assess whether such a cultural practice could fcring about reduction in the incidence of Plutella xylostella (L.) and Crocidolomia binotalis Z. on cabbage. No reduction in the larval incidence of both the pests was observed when different combinations of cabbage and tomato were planted at the same time. A slight reduction in the incidence of both the lepidopterans had ensued in all the planting patterns, when cabbage was planted 15 days later than tomato. Maximum reduction, however, was observed following planting pattern of one row cabbage and one row tomato (cabbage planted 30 days later than tomato). It is further opined that this type of cultural practice cannot be used as a sole control measure for both the pests, since the marketable yield of cabbage recorded in the promising intercrop combination was well below the attainable yield that could be expected when insecticide sprays are undertaken on pure cabbage. Significant reduction in net return was also obtained following this cultural practice as compared to cabbage receiving insecticidal sprays based on different management programmes.

Résumé

Des modèles différents de plantation de choux et de tomates ont été étudiés pour établir si telle culture mêlée pouvait réduire l'incidence des Plutella xylostella (L.) et Crocidolomia binotalis Z. chez le chou. II s'est révélé qu'il n'y a pas de réduction dans l'incidence des larves de ces deux insectes lorsque des combinaisons différentes de choux et de tomates ont été plantées en même temps. Mais on constate une réduction faible dans l'incidence des deux insectes lépidoptères dans tous les modèles de plantation, si le chou était planté 15 jours plus tard que la tomate. La réduction maximale à été constatée lorsqu'on plante des lignes alternantes de chou et de tomate (le chou étant planté 30 jours plus tard que la tomate). Nous pensons toutefois qu'on ne peut pas adopter ce modèle de cultivation comme seul moyen contre les deux insectes parce que le rendement vendable de choux obtenu par ce modèle de cultivation combinée des deux plantes était sensiblement plus faible que le rendement qu'on peut atteindre lorsqu'on cultive le chou seul en le protégeant avec la pulvéerisation d'insecticide. Une réduction importante du rendement net a été également obtenue en suivant ce modèle de culture par comparaison avec des choux soumis aux pulvérisation d'insecticide suivant différents programmes d'aménagement.
