Pressures to contain health care costs have challenged physicians to be more discriminating in the use of medical technology. Particularly important is the need to apply diagnostic technology selectively since the costs of diagnostic tests and procedures may account for as much as one quarter of total hospital costs and a smaller but substantial proportion of ambulatory care costs.
