1 It has been shown, for example, that works such as Maqdisī's Ahsan al-taqāsīm or Bal'amī's Tārīkh-nāmah exist in different recensions reflecting political biases. Lassner glosses over such problems as whether extant versions of the Prophet's biography should really be credited to Ibn Ishāq or lbn Hishām, or why there are significant discrepancies between quotations of lost sources in Tabari and other works.
