Determination of ‘Decade’ Fluctuations in the Earth’s Rotation 1620-1978

The ‘decade’ fluctuations in the Earth’s rotation in the period 1620-1978 are derived from astronomical observations. The torques on the mantle which produce these fluctuations attain a magnitude of 1018Nm (1025 dyn cm) around 1900.
