* This article was prepared before the outbreak of hostilities between India and Pakistan and the recognition by India of the State of Bangla Desh (formerly East Pakistan) at the beginning of December 1971. It is too early yet to assess what the effect of these developments is likely to be upon the subject-matter of this article, namely the transit trade of landlocked Nepal through Indian territory either to markets overseas or to Bangla Desh (East Pakistan). It has therefore been thought best to print the article exactly as originally written.
