The major subject within this degree occupies from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years of study, including a thesis that in history averages about 60,000 words and must represent original research based on primary material. Since 1974 about twenty-five such theses on topics connected with African history have been completed. The theses are written in Norwegian.
