Goodspeed's edition of the Dialogue in Die Ältesten Apologeten (Göttingen, 1915) is still the best. The text of 29, I is, as far as I know, agreed on by all editors. Cf. J. C. Otto3 (Jena, 1876–81) and G. Archambault (Paris, 1909).

My translation from Justin's text of Mal. 1:10–12, which differs from that of the LXX (A. Rahlfs6) in a few minor details. Cf. Otto's note ad loc.

Besides the places mentioned, cf. Dial. 19, 1; 46, 4; 49, 2.

Lampe, A Lexicon of Patristic Greek (Oxford, 1960ff.), s.v. notes that in Dial. 29, I ἔθνη is used “of Gentile Christians.” He cites no other instances of such a use. I suspect that the word was not generally used in this sense except in cases where the context made it clear who was meant. A good parallel is Rom. 15:27.

Cf. O. Cullmann, Urchristentum und Gottesdienst2 (Zürich, 1950), 24. He cites a number of early hymns and prayers, mostly from the New Testament. 1 Pet. 4:11 is especially interesting in the present connection.

Cf. Irenaeus, Adv. Haer. 4, 17, 5–6; Clement of Alexandria, Strom. 5,14,137; Tertullian, Adv. Jud. 5 and Adv. Marc. 3, 22. St. Paul may be alluding to Mal. 1: 10–21 in 1 Cor. 10:21, when he speaks of the τράπεζα κυρίου.

Above all, cf. Justin, Apol. I, 65–67.
