The Caledonian Sunnhordland Batholith comprises calc-alkaline plutons that have been assigned to three units according to their relative age and composition: a gabbro-diorite unit, a granodiorite unit and a later granodiorite-granite unit. The batholith was emplaced into an envelope including ophiolite and island-arc complexes, sediments and volcanites of early Ordovician age that were developed in a zone of plate convergence. Continued convergence resulted in the formation of a mature magmatic arc and a thickened crust; the late granitoids (unit 3), which commenced their crystallization at pressures around 6 to 7 kb, rose as permitted diapiric intrusions. The ingress and ascent of the magmas in this setting is considered to have been facilitated by the presence of major shear zones developed in relation to plate convergence. In this model, plastic instabilities were formed in an otherwise elastic middle and upper crust. Non-coaxial deformation was accelerated by the emplacement of magmas and the formation of abundant partial melts in water-rich sediments of the envelope. The deformation, which was accelerated by magma and melt lubrication in aureoles, controlled both the shape and internal structure in the gabbro and granodiorite plutons.

Subtidal columnar stromatolites up to 2.5 m high near Lee Stocking Island in the Exuma Cays, Bahamas, have surface mats approximately equally composed of algae and cyanobacteria. The stromatolites are composed of fine–medium oöid and peloid sand. This sediment is supplied to the growing stromatolite surfaces by strong tidal currents which lift grains into suspension and sweep migrating dunes over the columns. The algae include an unidentified filamentous chlorophyte, and numerous diatom species mostly belonging to Mastogloia, Nitzschia and Navicula. The dominant cyanobacteria are two oscillatoriacean species, both probably belonging to Schizothrix. Trapping of sediment is mainly effected by the unidentified chlorophyte which is veneered by epiphytic diatoms. Grains are bound into a mucilaginous mat composed of diatoms and cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria alone would not be able to trap and bind coarse sediment so effectively in this environment. In being coarse-grained and having a significant eualgal component to their mats, these stromatolites are similar to subtidal columnar stromatolites at Shark Bay, Western Australia. The Lee Stocking stromatolites are physically stressed by high velocity tidal currents and mobile sediment. The Shark Bay stromatolites are stressed by hypersalinity. In both cases stress deters grazers, encrusters and bioeroders. These coarse-grained eualgal stromatolites contrast with micritic and predominantly prokaryotic stromatolites of most Recent marine environments, and are not analogues for most pre-Phanerozoic stromatolites. They appear to be a response to changing stromatolitic mat components in the Cenozoic.

The Wedza–Mimosa platinum deposit is a loosely stratiform PGE-rich sulphide zone (MSZ) set within a complexly layered, shallow synclinal sequence of pyroxenites and gabbros. Both the MSZ and its host rocks display systematic stratigraphic, lithological and compositional variations between the margins and the axis of the deposit. A well preserved marginal facies is characterized by discordant layering, stratigraphic complexity, evidence of non-equilibrium crystallization, magmatic erosion and extensive pegmatoids, as well as by irregular MSZ development and metal contents. The principal transverse variations and marginal phenomena are interpreted in terms of the high transverse heat flux and heat gradient caused by the narrow trumpet-like cross-sectional structure of the original magma chamber, the magma replenishment process, the angular relationship between the chamber floor and the stratified magma, and the increase in magma density caused by the onset of plagioclase crystallization.

Rb–Sr isotope whole-rock data from the end-Caledonian Leinster Batholith define an errorchron age of 464±26 Ma, appreciably older than the accepted emplacement age of c. 405 Ma. This anomalously old age is the consequence of a highly variable initial Sr isotopic composition. Initial Nd ratios and TDM model ages also show a wide range of values. However, these isotopic variations are neither randomly distributed nor related to petrographic changes but instead reflect, in a simple way, geographic position about the axis of the batholith. The isotopic pattern revealed in the Leinster Batholith means that isochron ages obtained from S-type granites may be largely dependent on the sampling scheme adopted. The variable isotopic composition of the granite most likely resulted from either a heterogeneous metasedimentary source or hybridization of coeval, dominantly crustal melts.

Depressions and embayments of the southern Fenland margin and islands are ascribed to periglacial processes in the Devensian Stage (last cold stage) of the Pleistocene. The processes, which may be included in the general term thermokarst, include thermal erosion as an important element. The age of the active landscape evolution appears to be Late Devensian. The Crowland Bed of the Fenland Pleistocene succession is a product of these processes.

Chlorite–mica stacks in the Llandovery sedimentary rocks of central Wales have been studied, both within cleaved turbidite mudrocks, and within early diagenetic apatite, carbonate and monazite concretions. Stacks show a graded distribution within turbidite units, indicating an origin as detrital particles. Concretions provided an arrested diagenetic environment which restricted subsequent deformation and so revealed the nature of the stack precursor minerals. These included detrital mica, and also probable pyroxenes, amphiboles and volcanic rock particles, relic textures of which can be seen preserved within the concretions. Diagenetic alteration to chlorite, probably with some white mica intergrowth, occurred, most probably via smectite and then mixed-layer or swelling chlorite intermediates. Subsequent modification, during the Caledonian cleavage-forming episode, determined the present shape and mineralogy of the stacks. Outside concretions, chlorite pseudomorphs were rotated by tectonic compression, crushed at their margins and pulled apart along (001) cleavage and slip planes. Growth of at least two generations of secondary mica infillings has been recognized, and this was probably accompanied by the growth of secondary chlorite. This resulted in barrel-shaped stacks, elongated parallel with cleavage, and with the (001) plane rotated from the bedding towards the perpendicular to the cleavage. Within early diagenetic concretions it is evident that some stacks had formed prior to lithification. However, these have a relatively simple morphology and the original bedding-parallel grain shapes are largely preserved.

Structural, petrographic and metamorphic evidence is presented for localized end-Caledonian (Acadian) décollement within a ‘black shale’ formation in the central Welsh Basin, close to the Caradoc–Ashgill boundary. Similar detachments are probably widespread in other parts of the, paratectonic Caledonides with upright folds and cleavage, particularly in sequences with strong viscosity contrasts.

Palynomorphs from the Stonehaven Group indicate a late Wenlock to early Ludlow age. This is older than the currently accepted Pridoli age based on fish and arthropods. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. A previous correlative of the Stonehaven Group has been the Old Red Sandstone of Kerrera, Argyll. However, palynological assemblages from both Kerrera and the adjacent succession at Oban are in fact younger than that from Stonehaven in being of latest Silurian to earliest Devonian age. The palynomorphs from Kerra and Oban lie beneath the important geochronological tie-point of the Lorne Lavas and suggest that the Silurian-Devonian boundary is older than currently accepted.
