P01-343 - Cultural Variations in the Idioms of Distress in Migrants in the Netherlands
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 17 April 2020
Abstract
The Department of Transcultural Psychiatry & Psychotherapy has built up expertise in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders since its inception 25 years ago. More than 50% of the population of Rotterdam was born outside The Netherlands or has one or both parents from outside The Netherlands. Some examples of idioms of distress based upon practice in the Department will be described.
The effect of globalization on the idiom of distress will also be reviewed. Careful and culturally sensitive diagnostic classification is essential in providing optimal care for this large group.
