Diferencias sexuales en las tasas de contacto y utilización de los servicios psiquiátricos. Un estudio de seguimiento de tres años en el norte de Finlandia

Resumen

Se estudiaron las diferencias sexuales en el uso de los servicios psiquiátricos en el Hospital Central de la Universidad de Oulu en Finlandia durante un seguimiento de tres años. Se utilizó una cohorte de incidencia tratada de un año de nuevos pacientes. La cohorte total incluía 537 pacientes (46,7% eran varones). La tasa de incidencia anual era 6,7 por 1.000 miembros de la población adulta tanto para los varones como para las mujeres. Comparados con las mujeres, los varones eran más jóvenes y más a menudo carecían de empleo, no estaban casados y vivían solos o con sus padres, y no tenían con tanta frecuencia un piso propio. Los varones predominaban entre las psicosis orgánicas, los trastornos de la personalidad y las dependencias, y las mujeres entre los trastornos neuróticos. Los varones habían tenido más a menudo atención hospitalaria previa y atención hospitalaria en el contacto índice, y tenían más admisiones, admisiones forzosas y contactos ambulatorios de urgencia que las mujeres. Sin embargo, no hubo diferencias sexuales en el uso de contactos ambulatorios planeados, en la duración de la atención hospitalaria y en el consumo total de atención psiquiátrica. El género masculino era un predictor independiente de las admisiones hospitalarias.
