Cambio de patrones de la asistencia en salud mental en Grecia (1984-1996)

Resumen

Grecia se unió a la Comunidad Europea en 1981 y, tres años después, la Comisión de las Comunidades Europeas proporcionó ayuda financiera y técnica en virtud de la Regulación 815/84 de la CEE para la modernización del sistema de asistencia psiquiátrica tradicional, con énfasis en la descentralización de los servicios de salud mental y el desarrollo de servicios comunitarios, así como en la desinstitucionalización de los pacientes de larga estancia y la mejora de las condiciones en los hospitales mentales públicos. Durante los 11 últimos años, la puesta en práctica del programa de la Reg. 815/84 de la CEE contribuyó a un cambio significativo hacia la asistencia y la rehabilitación extramuros. Se ha disminuido gradualmente el papel de los grandes hospitales mentales y se ha desinstitucionalizado a gran número de pacientes de larga estancia. Se acepta comúnmente que el programa de reforma psiquiátrica financiado por la CEE, a pesar de las insuficiencias y las restricciones, tuvo un efecto sobre el cambio del panorama de la salud mental en Grecia.
