Sociological and historical enquiry in Europe has had as a continuing pre-occupation the problem of the Uniqueness of the West, the search for factors that can be held responsible for its achievements in the modern world and in particular the emergence of industrial capitalism. That search has led to a devaluation of the East and consequently a mistaken self-understanding of the West. This article attempts to outline the problem with regard to rationality, commercial literacy (book-keeping), mercantile enterprise and family participation in such activity.

Sociologues et historiens, préoccupes par de l'Occident, ont cherché avec constance les facteurs responsables de l'avènement du monde moderne et du capitalisme industriel. Ce faisant, ils ont développé une sousestimation des civilisations de l'Orient et par voie de conséquence une lecture fausse de l'Occident. Le travail dont cet article donne la primeur s'attaque à ce problème en considérant la rationalité, la diffusion de l'écrit, l'entreprise commerciale et la participation familiale à ces activités.

Seit langem setzen sich in Europa soziologische und historische Studien mit der Einmaligkeit des Abendlandes auseinander. Sie erörtern jene Elemcnte, die fur das Entstehen der »modernen Welt«, insbesondere des Kapitalismus entscheidend sind. Die Forschung hat dabei die Bedeutung des Orients vernachlässigt und folglich die Entwicklung der westichen Welt falsch eingeschätzt. Goody untersucht diese Problematic, indem er auch die Rationalität, das Buchwesen, die Handelshäuser und die familiäre Beteiligung an diesen Unternehmcn in scine Betrachtung einbezieht.
