The European Journal of Archaeology, the official journal of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) and published by Cambridge University Press, is seeking to appoint a new academic General Editor, to take up office in September 2025, following the retirement of the current General Editor.
The European Journal of Archaeology is a broad, well recognised and well cited archaeology journal, currently published four times a year. Starting in 2025, the journal will be published fully open access. The editorial work is carried out by the General Editor, assisted by a Deputy Editor, Reviews Editors and an Editorial Board.
The General Editor chairs the Editorial Board and liaises on regular basis with the EAA Executive Board. The Editorial Board normally meets once a year at the Annual Meeting but most of its work is done by email. All production and distribution work is undertaken by Cambridge University Press.
The General Editor will be responsible for:
- Taking a proportion of papers through the EJA editorial peer review process to a final recommendation
- Editing final papers to improve the clarity of arguments and quality of English
- Checking and correcting proofs as required and returning them to the agreed Publisher’s schedule
- Soliciting high quality manuscripts for the Journal
- Acting as an ambassador for the EJA at conferences and other events
- Supporting the work of the Reviews Editors
The General Editor is required to be able to work to deadlines, have excellent communication skills, have an ability to carry out editorial tasks based upon prior editorial experience and a breadth of interests, and to work remotely as part of a larger editorial team. Candidates will have specialist expertise in one or more areas of European archaeology and heritage but will also be expected to work outside their own specialist fields of expertise.
The EJA is published mainly in English (though articles in French and German are also accepted), and the General Editor must be fluent – though not necessarily a native speaker – in English. Applicants who are not native speakers should indicate how they will deal with the issue of language checking and improvement, where necessary.
The term of office is three years, renewable if desired, and would commence in September 2025, following a six-months handover period. To enable recruitment of an appropriate successor, the notice period is 12 months.
The General Editor will receive an honorarium of €2000 per annum.
The General Editor will be expected to be a member of the EAA, and will be required to attend the Editorial Board meeting which takes place at the start of each EAA Annual Meeting (late August – early September). Both the EAA membership fee and the Annual Meeting registration fee are to be paid by the General Editor themselves, while full travel costs and (part of, depending on current EAA reimbursement policy) accommodation will be covered by the EAA.
