* According to the list headed ‘Members of the Global Commission for Certification of Smallpox Eradication’ which was attached to this communication from the World Health Organization dated 21 December 1979, there were 21 members in all (including two each from USA and USSR, and counting one from Iran who was indicated as ‘Unable to attend’), representing nineteen countries as follows: Australia, Botswana, Brazil, China, France, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sweden, UK, USA, USSR, and Zaire. Nevertheless the communication from WHO referred to ‘a 17-nation group of scientists’(sic).—Ed.
