Abstract

A reprint of the Introduction to the new ‘Collins Gem Scots Dictionary’, edited by Marian Makins (1995), which describes Scots as ‘the language of Germanic origin spoken by most Scots’. Tom Shearer is the lexicographer who wrote the piece.
