Il est triste mais néanmoins vrai que Russell est passé à l'Histoire de la Philosophie, qu'il est démodé alors qu'il est encore si plein de vie. Aujourd'hui, nous attribuons une valeur restreinte à une petite partie seulement de cet héritage considerable, et cette partie elle-même est souvent dénigrée. Je fais allusion, bien entendu, à la théorie des descriptions définies qui, malgré les gaucheries de jeunesse dans On Denoting et les tendances métaphysiques de l'âge mûr, demeure encore, sous une forme ou sous une autre, dans les travaux de philosophes tels que Quine.

There are those who say that the changes in the position of Jean-Paul Sartre from the publication of L'Être et le néant to the appearance of Critique de la raison dialectique constitute a “radical conversion”. Some attribute this conversion to the influence of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Sartre has given support to this claim by acknowledging that Merleau-Ponty taught him politics and in doing so helped to move Sartre from the fierce individualism of his early period to the position which culminated in CRD, a position informed by a much greater appreciation for social entanglement. But what is not clear is that Merleau-Ponty's influence upon Sartre extended to Sartre's fundamental convictions, particularly to his fundamental ontological theses. Kwant tells us that Merleau-Ponty's objections to Sartre in the last days of his life indicate that he believed that Sartre had not altered his ontological views. Sartre has not commented upon that issue. It is of vital interest because Merleau-Ponty explicitly claimed in Les Aventures de la dialectique that Sartre's mistaken political views were a consequence of his mistaken ontological principles. Were this true and were it true that Sartre had not made significant alterations in his ontology, one would expect that Merleau-Ponty would have to have said that Sartre's political views in CRD were similarly mistaken. We know that he did make some comments to that effect but, since Merleau-Ponty's tragic death prevented the full articulation of his latest opinions, we cannot be certain.

En musique, trois faits allaient de soi avant notre siècle, et ont cessé un beau jour d'aller de soi. Ces trois faits peuvent être exprimés de manière simple par trois phrases. Tout d'abord il allait de soi que la musique était tonale: l'histoire de la musique n'avait du reste jamais connu autre chose que la tonalité. En second lieu, il allait de soi que la musique s'exprimait dans des formes qui certes pouvaient évoluer, mais qui n'étaient pas problématiques: les possibilités du genre symphonique par exemple paraissaient inépuisables. Enfin il allait de soi que la musique avait pour tâche essentielle d'exprimer des sentiments humains.

D'où vient que « peine » signifie à la fois « punition, châtiment infligés à celui qui commet une infraction » et « affliction, fatigue, misère » (Larousse) ? Que se passe-t-il exactement quand la souffrance se métamorphose en peine ? Et si pareille mutation relevait de la fiction mythologique, ou si, tout simplement, elle appartenait à un stade révolu de l'histoire, quel sens les chrétiens pourraient-ils encore donner à la rédemption sanglante et à l'expiation sacrificielle du Christ?

Le problème du statut épistémologique de la psychanalyse et la question de son fondement et de sa place dans l'éventail des sciences humaines prennent un sens nouveau avec l'introduction des perspectives structurales auxquelles le psychanalyste français Lacan initie ses élèves depuis plus de quinze ans dans un enseignement que Ton peut bien qualifier d'ésotérique. Auparavant disséminée dans des articles qu'il n'était pas toujours facile de repérer, la pensée de Lacan nous est maintenant accessible par une plus large avenue grâce à la récente publication des Ecrits réunis de l'auteur.

This is a book built round an argument. Several variants of the argument are offered, and I shall consider but one of them. It is directed against the following act utilitarian principle:

AU: An act is right if and only if it would have best consequences (i.e. consequences at least as good as those of any alternative act open to the agent)

The argument may be freely rendered as follows. Suppose that we have an agent, Smith, in a society, S, such that the following conditions are satisfied:

C1: Smith accepts AU and attempts always to act in accordance with it

C2: Smith is rational: he understands the implications of accepting AU and applies AU correctly

C3: No other person in S accepts AU

C4: All others in S know that C1 and C2 obtain

C5: All others in S are rational: they understand the implications of Smith's accepting AU

C: All others in S are tolerant of Smith's accepting AU: they do not criticize him for acting in accordance with it

C7: Smith knows that C3 – C6 obtain

C1 – C7 collectively define the position of an act utilitarian in a non-act utilitarian society, with certain assumptions as to rationality and tolerance. Then the thesis is that under C1 – C7 Smith will sometimes fail to do the act with best consequences. His very acceptance and correct application of AU (under the other conditions) conspire to prevent the production of certain good consequences which would otherwise be possible.

Dans un article intitulé l'Avenir de la littérature, Onimus écrit: « Nous sommes entrés—pour la première fois sans doute dans l'histoire de l'humanité—dans une société où la poésie en tant que genre littéraire est ignorée ou considérée comme une activité bizarre, quelque chose d'entièrement désuet, de ridicule, voire de dangereux, à la limite de l'aliénation ».

Il dit bien. L'orientation du public actuel est un phénomène inédit qui invite à réfléchir. Et de fait, l'auteur fournit à cette attitude trois raisons pénétrantes. D'abord, le cinéma draine à lui les grands créateurs; les Mémoires ensuite provoquent de l'engouement; la vie trépidante enfin tient en horreur la rhétorique, les fleurs et les figures. À ces causes, il faut ajouter les manifestes impatients qui lancent le poète à la conquête des sons, au mépris de la forme, au triomphe de l'absurde et lui font produire des œuvres qui ne sauraient retenir l'attention.

This slender volume contains notes, kept by some of those who were present, of lectures on aesthetics and religious belief, and of conversations with Rush Rhees concerning Freud. The lectures were given informally by Wittgenstein at Cambridge in 1938; the conversations took place between 1942 and 1946. Wittgenstein neither wrote down nor saw the material here presented, but the editor reports that the versions of lecture notes by different students agree to a remarkable extent.

Despite the varying authorships and intervals of time during which these Lectures and Conversations took place, the book is a surprisingly integrated whole and not simply a miscellany. What seems to unite its three topics and their treatment is Wittgenstein's examination of the kind of evidence upon which each of the three disciplines (Aesthetics, Psychoanalysis, Religious Belief) have tended to rely—his argument being that 1) Psychoanalysis has tended to rest on insufficient evidence; 2) Aesthetics on the wrong kind of evidence; and 3) Religious Belief on the false notion that it is a matter of evidence when this is not at all the case.

Bertrand Russell was, I believe, the first English philosopher with the wit and the graciousness to realize that a history of philosophizing from Thales to Bertrand Russell was not a history of Philosophy but was simply a history of Western philosophy. Since the appearance of his book the term ‘Western philosophy’ has been fairly widely adopted without much evidence, however, that interest in philosophizing which is not Western has increased greatly. This is noteworthy, as virtually every other academic field has felt a post-war convulsion of interest in the cultures and civilizations outside of Europe and America. What anthropologist can hold up his head unless he is aware of relevant material from Asia and Africa? What student of religion can any longer ignore the radical insights of religions outside the Christian pale? What linguist can ignore Sanscrit? What historian (except perhaps the Upper Canadian) can ignore the human chronicle in Asia and Africa?
