Aristotle's explanation of the “active intellect” in De Anima III, 5 constitutes a problem for us simply because we have to take this philosopher so seriously. If he were a writer given to poetic lapses or mythical adornments to his work we could consider dismissing the whole chapter as unessential. However, we know that Aristotle does not write unessential chapters, and that he is invariably engaged in an attempt to explain his subject fully and systematically, neither adding to it nor leaving anything out.

The De Anima, for example, is an attempt to describe the characteristics of living things, in an ascending order from the basic functions of vegetables to the most abstract thinking by human beings. The activities of nutrition, sensation, common sense, imagination, and movement are presented in Book II and in the early part of Book III.

La civilisation contemporaine est si liée au développement de science et de la méthode scientifique que sans une juste compréhension de la nature de ces dernières elle demeure incompréhensible. Mais il est moins facile de préciser la nature de cette liaison, de déterminer la signification de la science pour notre civilisation actuelle. Nous sommes en effet intéressés à savoir quel est le degré et la nature de l'influence de la science, quelles réactions elle provoque de la part de l'homme mais aussi pourquoi elle exerce cette influence et provoque ces réactions. Ces questions sont importantes car il en va de l'évolution actuelle de l'humanité. Bien entendu des réponses à ces questions demanderaient un exposé beaucoup plus élaboré que celui qui va suivre. Conscient des difficultés, je tâcherai néanmoins d'aborder quelques aspects du problème.

Dans un premier article sur le rapport à établir entre les problématiques sartrienne et marxiste é la lumière de la Critique de la Raison Dialectique, nous avions tenté de circonscrire projet spécifique de Sartre face au Savoir marxiste.

Nous aimerions poursuivre aujourd'hui notre réflexion par une analyse de quelques thèmes majeurs nous permettant de voir dans quelle mesure et dans quel sens ces deux problématiques se recoupent ou non. A cet effet, nous distinguerons: I) le problème du matérialisme et de la dialectique, 2) la conception de l'homme, 3) la perspective de base (rareté et surproduit), 4) le concept de classe.

Le philosophe français G. Bachelard est né à la fin du siècle dernier et est mort en octobre 1962, après un destin intellectuel très brillant. Par sa vie d'éternel étudiant, c'est-à-dire en état de recyclage continu, par sa culture finalement polyvalente et par son œuvre multidisciplinaire, ce philosophe et ce savant nous apparaît aujourd'hui comme un témoin très lucide, exceptionnel même, d'une époque bouleversée, et comme un interprète génial, un prophète en quelque sorte, dont la voix connaît une influence chaque jour grandissante. Il nous apparaît aussi comme un médecin et un éducateur pour l'homme d'aujourd'hui. Le renouveau culturel que sa pensée suscite est à bien des égards analogue à l'avènement en Occident de la culture cartésienne, et précisément complémentaire de celle-ci devenue aujourd'hui gravement insufissante.

Despite impressive evidence to the contrary, there remains nagging doubt that between language and the world there is sufficient cleavage for philosophical doubt to slip in. The apparent incommensurability of reality and knowledge of it has, indeed, a certain quasi-logical foundation which it is interesting to explore.

Before undertaking an examination of the issues current in social criticism, it is necessary to settle upon the method which ought to be common to the several social sciences. For if the adoption of a particular method results in unconscious acceptance of features of the society under critical examination, then clearly any such putative critique is in fact futile. In this paper I examine some of Marcuse's largely negative comments regarding the method currently employed in the social sciences. I am not concerned to arrive at a complete view as to the appropriate method, but rather to expose some questions that need to be answered if any such view is to be formulated.

Many philosophers would claim that sexual differentiation is irrelevant to philosophy. They would say that the philosopher is trying to understand the world and himself qua human being, not qua man or qua woman. While this may have been the intent, in ethics some curious results concerning women have occurred. In some cases, when one compares the analysis of what a philosopher considers to constitute a good person with what he says about the nature of woman, we must conclude that a woman cannot ultimately be good. In this paper I propose to show how two philosophers of widely differing traditions, namely Aristotle and Kierkegaard, have both maintained this.

La Cybernétique a trop de visages et trop peu d'âge en même temps pour qu'une pondération juste soit tentée des affirmations qu'elle suscite. Ses préventions pourtant n'en demeurent pas moins colorées des reflets d'un soleil que Descartes fit lever et dont il semble que le soir est sans fin. Car loin de penser que le dualisme cartésien ait été aboli par la science nouvelle, il m'apparait que c'est une nouvelle confirmation qu'il en reçoit. Si une machine assumait toutes les fonctions de l'homme, elle n'aurait annexé ni la pensée ni l'âme que Descartes a définies.

Anotion employed very frequently by contemporary philosophers is that of the object of acts and emotions, as distinct from their cause. This paper assumes that the notion of objects of acts and emotions is viable, even though it has been plausibly argued that one cannot hope to pin down the notion with any generality or conciseness. I am concerned here with attempts to classify objects of acts and emotions, as a means to clarifying the logical behaviour of the notion. My purpose in the first two sections is to remove some obscurities in the classifications which have been proposed, without challenging their basic structure. In the third and longest section, I argue that this structure, though largely sound, does in fact stand in need of some modification if it is to be as useful as philosophers have hoped.

In the March 1971 issue of Dialogue Professors E.H. Madden and P.H. Hare attempt with much ingenuity and resource to resuscitate a pre-Humean theory of causal connection. Firmly disowning the “epistemological and metaphysical disasters” that have led to “terrible consequences”, (such as an appeal to volitional efficacy, Humean associationism, etc.), and making only a mildly favourable gesture in the direction of Michotte, they yet claim that the defence of Hume by modern regularists, even when abetted by the weapons of phenomenology, can be refuted by such indubitable facts as that we observe avalanches destroying villages, waves eating away the shoreline and the “wind-bending-the-trees” (pp. 17f).

Dans les réflexions générates qui terminent son livre, Michel Jouhaud rappelle, sous forme de question, quel a été «le problème initial » de son étude: « à quelles conditions l'expérience morale peut-elle avoir une portée ontologique? ou, en d'autres termes, à quelles conditions les valeurs peuvent-elles être le teémoignage de l'Etre (657) ? » Je ne pense pas que ces deux formulations d'une même question soient eéquivalentes dans le cas de Blondel et je tâcherai d'expliquer pourquoi, mais il reste que la premiere formule exprime bien l'objet central de cette belle thèse dont la lecture fut un vrai « bonheur philosophique ».
