1 Admittedly, I prefer unabridged articles because (1) shortening articles risks leaving out important information; (2) part of what I want students to learn is to be able to pull out arguments from a text; and (3) I want to avoid catering to the "TV mentality" that many students have, that their interest can be sustained for as long as it normally takes for the next commercial to appear. But in no case did I find that important information was left out of an article. Indeed, in most cases the articles are long enough to test students' skills at being able to pull out the arguments, and thus do not cater to the TV mentality.
