This thematic collection aims at stimulating research in the domain of Advanced Systems Engineering and creating a forum for debating novel and innovative approaches that will shape the cutting-edge engineering of tomorrow. High quality scientific contributions are required to set up the knowledge baseline of Advanced Systems Engineering and to further define and drive the thematic area.

Call for Papers

ASE – Advanced Systems Engineering in Research and Education

Digitalization, global competition, changes in work structures and the guiding principle of sustainability are confronting organizations with new challenges. But products, software, and services continue to be developed profitably, environmentally sustainable, and resilient. Subsequently, the way companies work and the cooperation between people, organization, and technology must evolve significantly.

The shift to autonomous, interactive, and dynamically networked products (i.e., cyber-physical systems) with increasing software and service content confronts companies with further challenges. These products can be viewed as systems interacting with other systems in so-called System of Systems (SoS). These goods and services of tomorrow are collectively referred to as Advanced Systems (AS). The engineering of these AS is inevitably accompanied by complexity. A particular challenge in the engineering of such systems is their validation, for example in the field of autonomous vehicles. A common and structuring approach to master complexity within interdisciplinary development processes is Systems Engineering (SE). Creative development methods, agile processes and digital tools and new ways of collaboration have the potential to secure value creation in the future. The integration of diverse system-oriented and highly innovative approaches of engineering will advance SE. This rethinking of engineering is summarized under the term Advanced Engineering (AE).

The entirety of these different facets of the transition of engineering – AS, SE and AE – represents a framework of action further called Advanced Systems Engineering (ASE). It acts as a guiding principle for the successful design of innovative products, services, and product-service systems as well as their development processes. ASE stands for a new comprehensive perspective in the planning, development, and operation of tomorrow's technical system generations.

A key factor in the engineering of new systems is describing, planning, and implementing new systems and SoS across system generations. This will allow Systems Engineering to remain a guiding principle for the successful design of innovative products, services, and product-service systems as well as their development processes. Therefore, the focus of Advanced Systems Engineering and this thematic collection is on novel approaches that will shape the cutting-edge engineering of the Advanced Systems of tomorrow.
