An earlier version of this paper was presented at the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies conference, 27 March 2012. The research was carried out from May to December of 2011 while I was a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science, American University in Cairo. That position was funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Morten S. Andersen, John Breuilly, John Chalcraft, Michael Farquhar, Nawal Mustafa, Hannah Scott Deuchar, Lamiaa Shehata, John T. Sidel, Sidney Tarrow and Elizabeth Trott commented on various drafts. Lamiaa Shehata, with her intelligence and love, was my guide in the “City Victorious” and gently corrected my Arabic when transcribing video footage; all other translations are my own. I also thank CSSH's David Akin and the anonymous CSSH reviewers for their incisive feedback. “The 25th January Revolution” (thawrat khamsa wa ʿashrin yanayir) is commonly accepted shorthand in Egypt when referring to the eighteen days of popular mobilizations that began on 25 January and ended 11 February 2011 with the ousting of Hosni Mubarak. I use it here to delimit the main focus of my study.
