The passages I quote from Hovhannes Cherishian's memoir have been revised from an unpublished typescript of the Reverend Arten Ashjian's draft translation with the generous help of Vahé Tachjian and Gerard Libaridian, who helped me refine the English translation of the Armenian text, and of Shahab Ahmed and Lerna Ekmekcioglu, who translated and interpreted the Arabic and Turkish components. I am further indebted to these four—without their ongoing encouragement and invaluable criticisms of earlier drafts, this article would not exist. I have likewise benefited from and am grateful for observations made by Cemal Kafadar, Krikor Moskofian, and Susan Pattie. I also thank the thoughtful editors of CSSH, Andrew Shryock and David Akin, and the anonymous CSSH reviewers, especially erstwhile anonymous reviewer Hakem Al-Rustom, whose advice led me to reconceive the article. I presented an earlier version at the MESAAS Graduate Conference at Columbia University in 2014, and the 2014 conference on “Ottoman Cosmopolitanism” at Birkbeck College, London, where I benefited from the comments of the other presenters and attendees. I dedicate this article to Stephen and Virginia Cherishian.
